Here in the UK we have a product called Marmite. It is a deeply divisive food, which you either love or hate. Those who love it, cannot understand how anyone could live without it - and of course, the opposite is true for those who hate it!
This same sentiment could be applied to volume as a trading indicator.
In other words, you are likely to fall into one of two camps. You either believe it works, or you don't. It really is that simple. There is no halfway house here!I make no bones about the fact that I believe I was lucky in starting my own trading journey using volume. To me it just made sense, and the logic of what it revealed was inescapable. And for me, the most powerful reason is very simple. Volume is a rare commodity in trading - a leading indicator. The second, and only other leading indicator, is price. Everything else is lagged. +info.

The Pentax K-50 ($699.95 direct, body only) is a solid midrange D-SLR camera, which happens to be available in any of 120 color combinations. Despite the fact that it can be had in a lilac and pink color scheme, it's a serious photographic tool. Cosmetics aside, it's the same body as last year's K-30, offering weather sealing, a 16-megapixel APS-C image sensor, a pentaprism viewfinder, and fast 5.9fps burst shooting. It's not quite as well-rounded a camera as our Editors' Choice Nikon D5200, which is a better SLR for recording video thanks to superior autofocus and a hinged rear LCD. But if video isn't a concern, the Pentax K-50 is good alternative for shutterbugs who enjoy taking photos in inclement weather and for discerning shooters who are underwhelmed by the D5200's pentamirror viewfinder.
Design and Features
The K-50 is fairly compact, measuring just 3.8 by 5.1 by 2.8 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 1.4 pounds. It's a smidge smaller than the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (3.9 by 5.2 by 3.1 inches), but the T5i is lighter at just 1.1 pounds. One of the reasons that the K-50 is heavy is that its viewfinder is a solid glass pentaprism. It covers 100 percent of the frame, so your exact frame in the finder, and it's a bit larger and brighter than the pentamirror finders found in the T5i, D5200, and most other sub-$1,000 cameras. Another factor is the weather sealing; each button and dial is protected by a gasket, so you can shoot in very rough weather. You can't submerge the camera in water, since it's not rated for that, but feel free to go out and shoot photos in a blizzard or hurricane with the K-50 when it's paired with a sealed lens.
Also setting the camera apart from others in this class is a dual dial control system with programmable functionality. Advanced shooters will love the ability to assign EV compensation, ISO control, and other common shooting settings to a dial that would normally go unused when shooting in aperture or shutter priority modes. If you're not as knowledgeable about the ins and outs of photography, you can set the K-50 to operate in auto or program mode and fire away as it takes control of settings. There are also a number of Scene modes available. These aren't quite as user-friendly as the Guide Mode found on the Nikon D3200, but do give some explanation as to when they are applicable.
There are enough physical controls packed into the K-50's compact body to keep advanced shooters happy, though not as many as the Pentax K-5 II?a more advanced camera that features a PC flash sync connector and a dedicated control to select the active AF point, both of which are absent from the K-50. You'll find buttons that adjust the ISO, activate exposure lock, control the flash, set the self-timer and drive mode, and control white balance on the rear, as well as a reprogrammable Raw button and a switch to toggle between autofocus modes on its left side.
The rear LCD is 3 inches in size and has a 921k-dot resolution. It's fixed, unlike the tilting display found on the Sony Alpha 65, which makes it a bit harder to use the camera if you need to shoot from an odd angle. The display is extremely sharp, though, and when you activate live view mode you have the option of using focus peaking as a focusing aid. This feature highlights in-focus areas of your frame to improve accuracy when focusing manually. Peaking works for stills only?the camera's processor isn't quite up to the task of keeping it active during video recording?but is a boon to anyone with a library of older, manual focus Pentax lenses. Like the company's other D-SLRs, you can use any K-mount lens without the need for adapters?that's close to 40 years worth of glass at your disposal. Like other Pentax SLRs, the shake reduction is built into the body, not into the lens, so any glass that you attach will benefit from stabilization.
The K-50 can be had as a body only, but only in a few of the 120 color combinations. In order to customize it completely you'll need to order it with the DA-L 18-55mm WR kit lens, which increases the price to $779.95. The WR designation means that the lens is sealed against weather as well, and this particular version of the lens (which features a plastic mount rather than a metal one) is only available when purchased along with a body. There's also a two-lens kit, which adds the telephoto zoom DA-L 50-200mm WR lens; that sells for $879.95. If shooting in bad weather isn't a concern, but you still like the K-50, you can save some money by opting for the K-500. It's the same camera, minus the sealing and minus a rechargeable battery; it is powered by standard AA cells. It's compatible with the same rechargeable battery that ships with the K-50; you'll just have to spend a bit and buy it and a charger separately if AA batteries aren't for you. The K-500 can be had for $599.95 with an 18-55mm lens, or for $699.95 with an 18-55mm and 50-200mm two-lens kit.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Reuters writes that ValueAct has started talks for a seat on the company?s board, but it?s not yet clear whether any major changes are planned or not.
Back in April when ValueAct officially announced the $2 billion stake takeover, sources from within the company suggested that founder Jeffrey Ubben might try to get rid of CEO Steve Ballmer, as pushing the software giant towards a devices and services concept wasn?t considered the right way to go.
Ballmer has recently announced a new reorganization plan for Microsoft that is supposed to put both hardware and services in the spotlight, as the CEO believes that the company needs to invest more in non-software areas.
The whole transformation plan is said to take about one year, so it?s probably premature to take a decision that could dramatically affect Microsoft?s future.

Okay, Microsoft. You had your fun fling with ARM processors, serenading your newfound love with glitzy dubstep ads full of creepy dancing schoolgirls. Thin and light tablets packing a--gasp!--free version of Office? Freedom from Intel and AMD's x86 processors? Sanctity from traditional Windows malware? How dreamy.
But the honeymoon is over, and reality ain't happy with the frivolous romp. Thursday, Microsoft announced that it took an accounting hit to the tune of nearly $1 billion--yes, with a B--thanks to the steep discount it had to apply to the millions of Surface RT tablets lying around unsold. The dream has become a nightmare, and not just for Surface.
Microsoft, it's time for Windows RT to take a vacation.
Like rats from a ship
The writing has been on the wall for Windows RT for a while now, but this week really crystallized that its time is not now.
By all accounts, the Surface RT was the star of the Windows RT show. In fact, stats from AdDuplex consistently showed it as the best-selling Windows 8/RT device period--but that doesn't mean it sold well from a pure numbers standpoint. After Microsoft moved a reported 900,000 Surface RT tablets alone in the fourth quarter of 2012, IDC reported that all Windows RT tablets combined only managed to ship 200,000 units in the first quarter of this year. Yep, the Surface RT is sinking fast.
That's bad. Nope, that's horrible.
But while Surface RT is the juggernaut when it comes to ARM-powered Windows slates, it's not the elephant in the room. That distinction goes to just how fervently third-party manufacturers are avoiding Windows RT.
Many of the biggest names in PCs have taken a pass on the operating system: HP, Samsung, Acer, and Toshiba all respectfully (or not-so-respectfully) bowed out of this particular race.
Even some tentative early supporters are starting to pull back. Lenovo unceremoniously dumped the RT-sporting IdeaPad Yoga 11 this past Wednesday, mere weeks after launching the IdeaPad Yoga 11S, which took the original Yoga 11's superb physical design and imbued it with an Intel Core processor and the full-blown version of Windows 8. The few Windows RT tablets left are all getting steep price cuts, from the?Surface RT to the?Dell XPS 10 to the Asus VivoTab RT.
And who can blame the manufacturers for fleeing? Windows RT simply isn't a compelling option right now. It doesn't run classic desktop programs, only modern-style Windows apps--and the Windows Store still doesn't have anywhere near a full catalog of apps,? despite recently hitting the 100,000 app milestone. There are still glaring Windows Store no-shows. Major software developers have been as slow to support Windows RT as hardware manufactuers.
Windows 8.1 will make the modern UI more useable, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still so new and different. The mixture of "different" and "no apps" isn't one destined for stardom.
Take a chill pill
"But wait!" you shout at your monitor, no doubt shaking your fist. "You just argued that Windows RT is crucial for the Windows ecosystem even if its sales stink, Brad!"
I did! And it is! But here's the thing: Windows RT's mere existence is the boon, not the tablets themselves. Windows RT is important, but actually selling Windows RT hardware is not.
The threat of ARM infiltration prodded Intel and AMD into creating much more energy efficient x86 processors, and tablets running on Clover Trail+ chips now offer full desktop software compatibility with all-day-plus battery life. Clover Trail's impending successor, Bay Trail, promises just-as-long endurance with much better performance, while Intel's flagship "Haswell" Core PC processors were built with a focus on energy efficiency. The availability of long-lasting, fully backwards compatible Windows 8 slates puts an even bigger damper on Windows RT's prospects.
Likewise, ARM support is now baked into the modern UI, right alongside x86 compatibility. Any modern-style app will run on both types of processor just fine. Meanwhile, the modern UI and apps run on the Windows Runtime application architecture, a variant of which also powers Windows Phone. Microsoft makes no bones about the fact that Live Tiles are its future, a dedication driven home by CEO Steve Ballmer's decision to unify all OS development within a single division under the One Microsoft umbrella.
The biggest benefits Microsoft gained from Windows RT--ARM integration and better power efficiency--occurred at its genesis, not from its day-to-day sales (or lack thereof).
Time out
All this points to one thing: Microsoft should call time-out for Windows RT.
Microsoft definitely needed to create Windows RT. The company was on the verge of missing the tablet train completely. It needed to keep Intel honest while broadening its technical horizons to embrace ARM. The Surface RT was the first Microsoft-made PC. I could go on.
But now that the creation is done, it's time to pull back and let the concoction bake. Windows RT doesn't make sense right now. Nobody wants it.?Intel's latest mobile processors rock battery life that rivals the endurance of ARM chips. The modern UI is still in its infancy, and Windows RT's entire existence revolves around an app store that's still relatively barren.
Meanwhile, reports of high Surface RT return rates abound. The headlines are filled with articles about billion-dollar Surface RT write-offs and manufacturers fleeing the OS. Nothing good is being said about Windows RT. The brand--and the very concept of using the modern UI as an exclusive computing interface--is being damaged irreparably, and for what? Windows RT tablets aren't selling, and from a strategic standpoint, Microsoft has nothing to gain by letting the horror show continue.
It's time to yank Windows RT. If Microsoft blazes the trail and lets the Surface RT fade away, third-party manufacturers will follow suit. And rather than being a disaster, a lack of available hardware would only give Windows RT room to grow, as odd as that may sound.
The vocal complaints about the OS's neutered nature would cease, as it wouldn't be in the limelight. But that doesn't mean Windows RT development would stop. Far from it! Since the modern UI is also found in Windows 8 proper, its wrinkles would continue to be smoothed out over time. More importantly, the Windows Store will continue to fill?with apps that work on ARM and x86 processors alike, especially once a critical mass of PC users inevitably upgrade to Windows 8.
Time could heal Windows RT's early wounds. After the modern UI and the Windows Store have a few years to blossom, Microsoft could reintroduce Windows RT in a much more viable form than it is today--one less conducive to complaints and returns.
And, until then, Microsoft could stop swirling fruitless billions down the drain.
Sources have told PCWorld that the Surface RT isn't dead, nor should it be in the long run. But for its own good, Windows RT should definitely take a short-term break.

**I was provided a Kohl's gift card to facilitate this back-to-school shopping review. All opinions are my own.
It's hard to believe, but school will be here before we know it! As a parent with a school-aged child, we are already busy starting to back-to-school shop! Needing essentials like clothing, backpacks, shoes, etc...I like to do as much of my shopping in one place as possible.
One of our favorite stores to shop at year-round is Kohl's. They offer a large variety of clothing for the whole family, home decor, accessories, and more...all in one place. No matter what the occasion, we are always pleased with the quality and savings at Kohl's.
Back to school season officially began this month and we've already visited Kohl's gearing up for the school season. As we shopped around, we were really impressed with all of the great deals and the variety they offer for school age children, teachers, and even must-haves for dorm rooms!
As a former teacher, I noticed the women's apparel as we were walking back to the children's clothing. There was a lot of variety for teachers getting ready to go back to school, to choose from with everything from dressy to more casual and comfortable.
As always, the children's clothing department was excellent! We needed quite a bit for Kaelyn as she prepares for Kindergarten and it was nice to find everything from undergarments and socks to shoes, pants and shirts for both the summer and fall/winter seasons!
We also spotted the backpacks and lunch bags which is also something we needed for Kaelyn! YAY!
If you're getting ready for back-to-school shopping, I would definitely recommend Kohl's as a one-stop shopping experience. It's a friendly environment, with a variety of high quality, stylish and affordable clothing items and products for the whole family!

ATLANTA (AP) ? One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, people gathered nationwide for rallies to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader and call for changes to the nation's self-defense laws.
The Florida case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense, guns, and race relations. Zimmerman, who successfully claimed that he was protecting himself when he shot Martin, identifies himself as Hispanic. Martin was black.
For some attendees, particularly those who are black, the rallies seemed as much about those larger issues as about the verdict.
"It's personal," said Cincinnati resident Chris Donegan, whose 11-year-old son wore a hoodie to the rally, as Martin did the night he died. "Anybody who is black with kids, Trayvon Martin became our son."
The Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network organized the "Justice for Trayvon" rallies and vigils outside federal buildings in at least 101 cities: from New York and Los Angeles to Wichita, Kan., and Atlanta, where people stood in the rain at the bases of two federal buildings, with traffic blocked on surrounding downtown streets.
Chants rang out across the rallies. "Justice! Justice! Justice! ... Now! Now! Now!" "'We won't forget." ''No justice! No peace!" Many also sang hymns, prayed and held hands.
And plenty of participants carried signs: "Who's next?" "I am Trayvon Martin." ''Enough Is Enough."
Most rallies began at noon. In New York, hundreds of people ? including Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, and music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce ? gathered in the heat.
Fulton told the crowd she was determined to fight for societal and legal changes needed to ensure that black youths are no longer viewed with suspicion because of their skin color.
"I promise you I'm going to work for your children as well," she told the crowd.
At a morning appearance at Sharpton's headquarters in Harlem, she implored people to understand that the tragedy involved more than Martin alone. "Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours," she said.
In Atlanta, speakers noted that the rally occurred in the shadows of federal buildings named for two figures who had vastly differing views on civil rights and racial equality: Richard B. Russell was a Georgia governor and U.S. senator elected in the Jim Crow South; Martin Luther King Jr. is the face of African-Americans' civil rights movement.
"What's so frightening about a black man in a hood?" said the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who now occupies the pulpit at King's Ebenezer Baptist Church.
"History would suggest that we have plenty of data to be worried when we see other folk moving through our neighborhoods in hoods. Some of them have on pinstripe suits ? but in their hearts, they're wearing a hood."
In addition to pushing the Justice Department to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, Sharpton told supporters In New York that he wants to see a rollback of "stand your ground" self-defense laws.
"We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again," Sharpton said.
"Stand your ground" laws are on the books in more than 20 states, and they go beyond many older, traditional self-defense statutes. In general, the newer laws eliminate a person's duty to retreat, if possible, in the face of a serious physical threat.
Zimmerman didn't invoke "stand your ground," relying instead on a traditional self-defense argument, but the judge included a provision of the law in the jurors' instructions, allowing them to consider it as a legitimate defense.
Neither was race discussed in front of the jury. But the two topics have dominated public discourse about the case, and came up throughout Saturday's rallies.
In Indianapolis, the Rev. Jeffrey Johnson told roughly 200 attendees that Saturday's nationwide rallies were about making life safer for young black men, who he said are still endangered by racial profiling.
Johnson compared Zimmerman's acquittal to that of four white officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King in 1992.
"The verdict freed George Zimmerman, but it condemned America more," said Johnson, pastor of the Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis and a member of the board of directors of the National Action Network.
In Miami, Tracy Martin spoke about his son.
"This could be any one of our children," he said. "Our mission now is to make sure that this doesn't happen to your child."
He recalled a promise he made to his son as he lay in his casket. "I will continue to fight for Trayvon until the day I die," he said.
Shantescia Hill held a sign in Miami that read: "Every person deserves a safe walk home." The 31-year-old mother, who is black, said, "I'm here because our children can't even walk on the streets without fearing for their lives."
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Obama said it's a reality for black men in American to "be followed in a department store" while shopping or to walk down the street and "hear the car doors lock." The nation's first black president said he had both experiences before he rose to social and political prominence.
At the New Orleans rally, La'Monte Johnson shared a similar story.
The California native said he's been stopped multiple times by police and handcuffed "because I fit the description of someone they were looking for," though he noted charges were never filed against him.
"You can be the greatest black guy around, but you can't get away from it," he said. "You're not equal."
Attorney General Eric Holder announced this week that his department would investigate whether Zimmerman could be charged under federal civil rights laws. Such a case would require evidence that Zimmerman harbored racial animosity against Martin.
Most legal experts say that would be a difficult charge to prove. Zimmerman's lawyers have said their client wasn't driven by race, but by a desire to protect his neighborhood.
Holder said the shooting demonstrates the need to re-examine "stand your ground" laws.
Despite the pledges from politicians and civil rights groups, people at some rallies said they had little hope of seeing self-defense laws rolled back significantly.
Kevin Parker, a 50-year-old from Stone Mountain, Ga., noted the conservative influence in his state, where gun-friendly Republicans control both legislative chambers and hold all statewide offices.
"Being that this is a red state, I just don't see that happening," he said.

Microsoft has just unleashed their latest ad Friday afternoon for the Microsoft Surface tablet that yet again slams its biggest competitor, the iPad.
Friday?s ad attacks the iPad?s lack of a kickstand for holding the device up without a hand, lack of support for USB plug-in peripherals, and the lack of an actual keyboard that can snap into place. Again, Siri is used as the tool for humiliating the device as you will see in the ad below:
For a mobile-friendly video link that works with our app, tap on the video link below:

At the end of the ad, Microsoft reveals the price differences between the devices; the iPad being $599 for 32GB, and the Microsoft Surface being $349 for 32GB as Siri says, "This isn't going to end wall for me, is it?... Nope; definitely not ending well. Do you still think I'm pretty?"

What to expect in the second half of the major league baseball season:
Five most interesting teams
1. Pirates: They haven't had a winning season since 1992 but might be the best team in the majors right now. They have pitching, defense and enough hitting with Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez and Starling Marte. Manager Clint Hurdle still has a challenge keeping his players positive after the last two seasons when they were a combined 56-93 in the second half after putting together a .543 winning percentage in the first half.
2. Red Sox: Maybe the 93-loss season a year ago was an outlier. But it's remarkable how quickly they have rebounded after cutting the cord with manager Terry Francona and general manager Theo Epstein after 2011. Club President Larry Lucchino and owner John Henry have a lot invested in getting this team deep into the playoffs, which will change the tone around Fenway Park. They will go as far as David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia carry them, as usual.
3. Dodgers: Here they come. The Guggenheim Partners powerhouse finally seems ready to win, with Hanley Ramirez healthy and Yasiel Puig raking. But the starting pitching beyond Clayton Kershaw is a concern and manager Don Mattingly still is feeling the heat. Matt Kemp is probably the guy who will determine if it's a magical October or a bitter September.
4. Indians: Francona's new team has a chance, even if few people in Cleveland know it. They deserve better than the 19,183 per game who have come to watch them at Progressive Field, but it may take one more big player move to finish the job. Matt Garza is a possibility.
5. Astros: What, you expected the Yankees? Houston played well to end the first half on pace for a 57-105 season, but things could get really ugly in August and September, especially if they trade Bud Norris.
Five most interesting hitters
1. Yasiel Puig: He's not this good, is he?
2. Miguel Cabrera: Fourteen players have won the Triple Crown, with only Ted Williams and Rogers Hornsby doing it twice. Nobody has done it in back-to-back seasons, but Cabrera can if he can make up the seven-homer deficit to Chris Davis (37-30).
3. Bryce Harper: He's only 20 but has the talent to carry a team. With the Nationals six games behind the Braves in the NL East, he has a chance to put himself into the MVP conversation if everything comes together.
4. Matt Kemp: Getting healthy isn't enough. Since his stunning first half in 2011 ? .982 OPS with 27 stolen bases ? he has had mortal totals of 44 homers and 31 stolen bases in 900 at-bats. Nothing would lift the Dodgers more than Kemp getting his 2011 swagger back.
5. Raul Ibanez: Among all the mistakes the Yankees have made recently, including the decision to let Russell Martin leave, nothing is more inexplicable than failing to hang on to the 2012 postseason hero. Ibanez, 41, quietly turned in a monster first half for the Mariners, delivering 24 home runs and an .892 OPS in one of the best post-40 performances ever. He could be the top bat traded at the deadline.
Five most interesting pitchers
1. Clayton Kershaw: Greg Maddux led the majors in ERA three years in a row (1993-95). Kershaw, who has a 2.30 ERA since the start of 2011, has a chance to duplicate that feat for the Dodgers. His 1.98 is better than any qualifier right now, with the Pirates' Jeff Locke at 2.15.
2. Jason Grilli: The Pirates' closer was the oldest first-time All-Star at 36. Now he's being asked to sustain a terrific first-half performance (29-for-30 in save situations) in summer-time heat.
3. Chris Carpenter: Long the Cardinals' bellwether, the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner is battling potentially career-ending nerve damage in his shoulder and neck but hit 95 on the radar gun in a recent rehab assignment. He says he will take a bullpen assignment happily if he can't stand up to six or seven innings in a game.
4. Matt Garza: A free agent at year's end, Garza is in line for a big contract if he can duplicate the success Anibal Sanchez had after being traded from the Marlins to the Tigers last year.
5. Max Scherzer: The Tigers stud is on track for a 22-2 season, which would be one of the best years ever for a starting pitcher (even if his 3.7 WAR ranks 10th among starters).
Five guys most under the gun
1. Mike Rizzo: The Nationals' GM has no regrets about protecting Stephen Strasburg last year. He may develop them if his team doesn't make an extended playoff run.
2. Ryan Braun: No one has more credibility to lose in the Biogenesis investigation than the Brewers' cornerstone player, who would be having a miserable season even without the PED cloud continuing to hang over his head.
3. Don Mattingly/Mike Scioscia (tie): The two Los Angeles managers can't say they weren't dealt hands they should win with. Both could be gone without playoff appearances.
4. Rob Manfred and Dan Halem: MLB's top lawyers were livid when Braun wriggled off the hook after a positive test for a banned substance in 2011. They need to secure suspensions from the aggressive prosecution of players tied to the tainted Miami clinic Anthony Bosch ran.
5. Yu Darvish: It's time to find out if the Japanese import is a big-game pitcher or just a show pony. He had a 4.26 second-half ERA last year when the Rangers couldn't hold off the Athletics.
Five most intriguing prospects
1. Byron Buxton, Twins: The 19-year-old second overall pick in last year's draft has hit .305 with an .896 OPS in 132 games as a pro. Will he get to the Twins as quickly as Joe Mauer, who played only 284 games as a minor-leaguer?
2. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, free agent: The 26-year-old Cuban hasn't signed yet but could find himself working big innings for the Dodgers, assuming that the Cubs or someone else doesn't outbid them.
3. Josh Phegley, White Sox: If the White Sox are going to avoid a total rebuild, they need some pleasant surprises from within their farm system. Phegley created a lot of excitement with three homers in his first 18 at-bats, including a grand slam, and suddenly looks like a great addition for a franchise that is about to lose Paul Konerko.
4. Michael Wacha, Cardinals: There are lots of arms in the wings if the Cardinals need them.
5. Micah Johnson, White Sox: The second baseman from Indiana University has a .415 on-base percentage and 65 steals in Class A this year, 13 more stolen bases than celebrated thief Billy Hamilton.
Five (theoretical)game-changing trades:
1. Addison Reed, Jesse Crain, Matt Lindstrom, Adam Dunn and cash to the Tigers for Victor Martinez, Nick Castellanos and Bruce Rondon: General manager Rick Hahn is willing to trade within his division, and this is the one blockbuster that could fix the Tigers' fatal flaw. The White Sox add a potential fixture (Castellanos) and an unproven power arm (Rondon) while changing their look with Martinez in Dunn's slot next year.
2. Giancarlo Stanton and Steve Cishek to the Rangers for Jurickson Profar, Martin Perez and power freak Joey Gallo (26 homers, 135 strikeouts in 83 games in low A): The Marlins say they're hanging on to Stanton but why? This is an offer they couldn't ignore.
3. Hunter Pence to the Nationals for outfielder Brian Goodwin: He was a godsend for the Giants a year ago and could have that same impact for Washington's stuck-in-the-mud lineup.
4. Matt Garza, Kevin Gregg and cash to the Indians for Zach McAllister and Danny Salazar: Before an injured finger sidelined him, the 25-year-old McAllister was turning a corner.
5. Jake Peavy and Lindstrom or Crain to the Diamondbacks for outfielders Jason Kubel and Adam Eaton: If the White Sox are changing their whole team, why not?
Five most interesting series
1. Pirates at Reds, July 19-21 and Sept. 27-29: The Pirates begin and end the second half at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati. If they're going to blink, these are times when it could happen.
2. Red Sox at Rockies, Sept. 24-25: Year-round interleague play means AL teams could be playing without their designated hitters in huge late-season games, and this two-game series the last week of the season is probably the best example. It's hard to imagine anything will be on the line when the Tigers visit the Marlins the final weekend.
3. Yankees at Red Sox, Sept. 13-15: Mariano Rivera has saved 56 regular-season games against the Red Sox. His last visit to Boston should be special, with seats adjacent to the visiting bullpen in heavy demand.
4. Dodgers at Nationals, July 19-21: With the All-Star Game scheduled later than normal this season, it's more important than ever to get off to a good start in the second half. As is true with Pirates-Reds, a sweep in this back-to-work series would be huge.
5. Marlins at Cubs, Sept. 2-4: The fate of North Carolina State lefty Carlos Rodon, an instant ace, or California high school shortstop Jacob Gatewood could be determined by how baseball's bottom-tier teams do in head-to-head matchups like this one. Because draft order is determined by reverse standings, the loser wins.

BOSTON (AP) ? A Rolling Stone cover story on Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev isn't on the stands yet but it's already generating controversy, with at least two New England-based retailers announcing Wednesday that they will not carry the issue.
The cover of the magazine's Aug. 1 edition is a photo in which Tsarnaev looks more like one of the rock stars that usually grace it than a suspect in the April 15 bombings at the marathon finish line that killed three and wounded more than 260. A preview on the magazine's website says the story by contributing editor Janet Reitman traces how "a bright kid with a charming future became a monster."
Rolling Stone editors said in a statement that the story falls within the traditions of journalism and the magazine's commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage.
"The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens," the statement said.
The CVS pharmacy chain, based about 50 miles from Boston in Woonsocket, R.I., and a Rockland, Mass.-based convenience store chain, Tedeschi Food Shops, both said they will not carry the magazine.
"Tedeschi Food Shops supports the need to share the news with everyone, but cannot support actions that serve to glorify the evil actions of anyone," the chain said on its Facebook page. "Music and terrorism don't mix!"
One of the marathon runners, Lauren Gabler, who works in IT consulting in Washington and was running her fourth Boston Marathon this year, said she at first thought the Rolling Stone photo was of a model or rock star and was surprised when she realized it was Tsarnaev.
"The cover almost tricks you into what you're looking at," she said.
She had finished the race well ahead of went the bombs went off hours into the race but was two blocks away headed to brunch when she heard and felt the explosions. She was not hurt.
"I haven't read the article yet, and I know it will probably be quite in-depth, but my initial reaction is that the photo that's being used almost makes him look like a good guy," she said. "That's the story line, but I think the public will have trouble, like me, making the association between here's the Boston bomber and here's the guy who appears to be cool on the cover of Rolling Stone."
Tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty in the bombings.

For one night, London was undisputed champion of the rock ?n? roll world.
With U.S. superstars Pearl Jam and 9,700 intense, happy fans jamming Budweiser Gardens Tuesday night, there could not have been a better rock concert anywhere.
How good was it? How strong an experience?
?Shall we continue?? frontman Eddie Vedder asked innocently well into the night. Somewhere on the way to Chicago, PJ may still be continuing. Here?s a little of what happened over almost three majestic hours.
An epic cover of band ally Neil Young?s Rockin? in The Free World could have made a spectacular finale ? as it did here in 2005. So could an overwhelming Alive, or a rapid-fire Evolution, or a crowd-choir version of Daughter. All could have been worthy ends to Pearl Jam?s London visit.
Tuesday, there was even more.
The 30-song night closed with a quieter, but still intense, note and Indifference. Three classics more than 2? hours into a show that will be remembered as the year?s best and should be a contender as the venue?s best ever.
That was one acoustic-styled, tender moment on a night when Vedder, guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament, drummer Matt Cameron also thundered with Even Flow and other hits.
And how about their sweet cover of J.?Frank Wilson?s 1964 hit Last Kiss as the band turned to serenade hundreds of fans seated behind the stage. Not many bands can make that weeper and a Neil Young anthem work on the same night.
?You?ve been very good to us .?.?. thanks very much everybody,? Vedder said late in the night.
Before the first hour was up, the band had blitzed through its new single Mind Your Manners with such punkish fire, Vedder?s microphone malfunctioned for a moment or two (see video below).
Massive singalongs marked the early going after the opener, Present Tense. The huge fan choir was encouraged by the charismatic Vedder and pretty much carried the third song, Elderly Women Behind the Counter in a Small Town.
The band arrived at Budweiser Gardens last Friday and could be heard rocking the empty venue on the weekend.
Tuesday?s show is one of just two for Pearl Jam this summer. Friday, the band plays Chicago?s Wrigley Field. In the fall, there are more North American dates.
There has been speculation Pearl Jam chose the Bud for its lone Canadian stop because the band had fond memories of its 2005 concert at the then-John Labatt Centre.
?I?ve heard that they liked the venue,? arena general manager Brian Ohl said Tuesday as the concert ? much envied across North America ? rocked on.
The frontman also had a greeting for the fans, using a bit of The Clash?s London Calling before the band switched into its hit Corduroy.
Tuesday?s concert started about 30 minutes late, as thousands of fans lined up outside and waited to get to their seats.
Once the band hit the stage, it was non-stop electric uplift.
The concert?s energy and magic came from the band and its back-and-forth love with such fans as a Canadian sailor who?d come from Halifax for the show.
?Their music brings me home,? said Petty Officer First Class Scott Mason, who was on his feet the whole night.
So was everybody on a night when Pearl Jam and its fans truly reached the peak together.
Here's the full setlist:
1. Present Tense
2. Nothingman
3. Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
4. Corduroy (with London Calling)

Hardware projects. T-shirts. People. Scientific research. Crowdfunding is getting applied to every possible niche vertical.
Now a Y Combinator-backed team is looking to bring crowdfunding to real estate, with big-ticket projects that often start at around a $10 million range.
Called RealCrowd, the startup is the brainchild of Adam Hooper and Roman Rosario, two longstanding real estate investors who worked for a Sacramento-based brokerage called Palmer Capital. At Palmer, Hooper and Rosario helped closed on more than $3 billion in investment transactions and was involved in managing investments in buildings like the ones on 625 Market St. or 260 California St. in San Francisco.
?There have been very few actual technology improvements with real estate investments over the last few decades, so the opportunity to change that only happens once in a life time,? Hooper said.
RealCrowd is aiming to give accredited investors the chance to put in as little as $5,000 to $10,000 to participate in larger commercial real estate transactions.
Each property on the site is vetted and features a business plan, detailing any kinds of improvements or maintenance that may be needed over the life of the investment. RealCrowd clients become minority stakeholders that entrust the operations and maintenance of the property to a real estate operator vetted by RealCrowd. Because Hooper and Rosario have been in the business for so long, they say they?ve accumulated enough relationships to know trustworthy operators, that will have profiles with their track records on the site.
?Going into it, you?ll know if the plan is for a 25-year lease to Walgreens with no capital improvements ? which is a very straightforward deal, or whether it?s to buy a building in SOMA and renovate it,? Hooper said.
While every deal is totally unique, each RealCrowd investor would ideally receive rental cashflow or returns in proportion to their stake in the property. RealCrowd takes a small transaction fee and an asset management fee to cover their administrative expenses, which would probably be in the 2 to 4 percent range of total equity committed upfront and then a 0.5 to 1 percent annual asset management fee.
Hooper says this is less than the fees an investor would pay to participate in a REIT, or real estate investment trust, where 15 percent might go toward fees before investing in the property.
While every deal is different, RealCrowd?s investments will likely be in a preferred position before the operators, who manage the deal ? meaning RealCrowd and its clients would take their capital out before the operators in a sale.
While there are a ton of other real estate crowdfunding startups, Hooper says many are focused on residential real estate, not much larger and more high-profile commercial deals.
For now, accredited investors have to sign-up to browse the site. But in 60 days, once the SEC?s ban on open solicitation finally lifts, RealCrowd will be able to publicly show off properties in its portfolio.
RealCrowd is bringing real estate investing to the masses. Gone are the days where you had to know somebody that had to know somebody, who hopefully knows somebody. Now, you know RealCrowd, and that?s all that matters! RealCrowd is built on the Founders? collective $3 billion of institutional quality underwriting and transaction experience. Over 20 years, the principals have reviewed, marketed, bought and sold real estate assets across the country. With deep industry experience in working with the nation?s best...

The penguin has been getting awfully cozy with game developers lately. This time it's with the company known to make GPUs melt at the faintest whisper of its name: Crytek. According to a recent job listing, the German shooter shop is looking for a programmer to work on a Linux version of CryEngine. Of course, you need to relocate to Deutschland and have a few years experience in software development under your belt. Seeing another major PC studio devoting resources to the open-source OS only increases the growing momentum for Valve's Steambox ecosystem of choice. To answer the eternal question, it appears that yes, even the Tux can run Crysis.

As a family we all enjoy a good board game night. Some nights however especially in this gorgeous weather things just get in the way, or the heat means you don?t feel up to one of those marathon games of Monopoly.
It for days like this that card games come in really handy.
Recently we were sent a pack of Animal Planet Happy Families cards from Cartamundi to review, and we?ve been getting lots of use out if them.
We?ve taken them on train journeys, trips to the grandparents, out to Starbucks, and even just plain ?ol played them at home on the sofa
There are 3 different versions of cards in the series ? Coral Reef, Savannah and Jungle.
We?ve been using the Coral pack, and as you would imagine all the animals included can be found in the Coral Reef.
I do remember playing Happy Families with the Butcher and Baker years and years ago, but I don?t remember how?that?ties in with these amazing animals.
The cards are split into 8 different types from A-H, each family has 4 cards.
The object of the game is to collect the most completed families. You do this by asking your fellow player for the cards your missing to complete your sets.
The great thing about these cards is rather than just being lettered from A-H each group is a different type of Coral Reef Creature. One are all Dolphins, and there?s also sharks, turtles and fish.
A nice touch is that each card also has a little bit of info about the animals, which helps prolong the game a bit as you read up and learn some cool facts.
I?d?definitely?recommend?the Animal Planet Happy Families Cards as a game a little different to the norm, which is easy to play and understand for all ages, and can be played,?finished?and put away?relatively?quickly.

It is estimated that over 60 million Americans now have hypothyroidism or an under active thyroid.? Perhaps the question should be:? Who isn?t tired, stressed, anxious and gaining weight these days?!
It is critical to have a healthy functioning thyroid (and endocrine system) in order to be healthy.
Below are five things that you may not be hearing in your doctor?s office about thyroid health.? Let?s ask some important questions though before we begin.
If you are currently on a synthetic hormone, it is not advisable to stop taking it and in no way would this advice be given to you here.? Supporting the thyroid and helping to bring it back to health takes time and coming off of a medication is only between you and your medical doctor.
In practice, one of the most common things that folks test for is endocrine support.? Your endocrine system is a series of glands that produce chemicals.? Hormones are chemicals that the body produces to do many things.? We are seeing so much damage to the endocrine system for very particular reasons these days.? Addressing what is causing this damage is key to restoring endocrine function.? Here are the five factors that may be contributing to why you thyroid is?under active?or not working properly.
1. Raw Materials
The first basic question one should ask is what thyroid hormones are made from, what are the raw materials???? The second question is whether you are getting enough of those materials? ?Your thyroid hormones are made from iodine principally and other co-factors.? Many people don?t know that the thyroid needs organic (not inorganic) forms of iodine.? Are people getting enough organic iodine in their diet these days?? No.? Salt has iodine in it, but this is not the best form for the body.? Some foods that naturally have iodine are sea vegetables (Kelp, Arame, Hiziki, Kombu, and Wakame), fresh organic cranberries (not the processed juice), navy beans, organic strawberries, Himalayan sea salt and organic potatoes.? If you don?t want to eat it in your diet, Standard Process has many wonderful mineral products such as Prolamine Iodine, Iodemere, Cataplex F Tablets, Mintran, and Organically Bound Minerals.? ?The thyroid doesn?t just need iodine though.? Many co factors are needed that are also missing from many people?s diets such as organic food sources of iron, selenium, zinc, and vitamins A, B, C and E, which are all needed to produce thyroid hormones.? Lastly, if you take a 50 year old horse (on its last leg) and force it to work, it will work, but it will die faster.? The thyroid is much the same.? If it is tired and ?dying? and you force it to work with iodine, it may work, but it may get worn out even quicker.? Giving the body organic forms of iodine will not solve the answer in the many cases.? We need to look at the other reasons why the thyroid is not working correctly and address those things too.
2: Damage due to chemicals.?
Our world is full of them.? Recently I was made aware that we have over 60,000 chemicals in the world today and the majority of them have not been tested for safety on humans.?? Man-made chemicals seem to have an affinity for the endocrine system (because they are chemicals too), and do all kinds of damage.? One hundred years ago, we didn?t have all the chemicals we have today.? Therefore, the threats to our endocrine system are very different today.? Two of the most damaging chemicals that we are bombarded with today are fluoride and chlorine.? We do not need fluoride for strong teeth.? Dr. Weston Price traveled the world to various tribes in the early part of last century to discover people that had never brushed their teeth before and literally had perfect teeth.? After being exposed to the the Western diet, their health and teeth degraded.? We also don?t need chlorine either.? These chemicals are in the same family of elements (the halogen family) as iodine and have an affinity for the thyroid gland.? Taking a hot ten minute shower in regular city or municipal water dumps massive amounts of chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals that are in the water onto your body to be absorbed through the skin.? Your skin absorbs everything and those chemicals can hit your blood stream very quickly and travel all around.? Research that has recently come to light has mentioned that fluoride calcifies the pineal gland.? Proper pineal function is critical to getting a good night?s sleep.
The fun doesn?t stop there though.?? If we look at our deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, perfumes, body sprays, toothpaste, shaving cream, laundry soap and many other health products, they are loaded full of toxic chemicals.? Mercury from dental fillings is also a leading factor in damage to the thyroid.? All of these chemicals destroy health.? Drink filtered water at the source (not bottled water, its wasteful and plastic is a chemical) and buy a filter for your shower.? Swim in ozonated pools. ?Buy organic health products.? Lastly, the body needs to be cleansed of all this garbage within.? Parotid PMG and Cholacol II are great for chelating heavy metals and chemicals from the body and thyroid.? Thyro-Chord and Thyropath are great products to clean out the thyroid directly and restore function.? ?If you need a whole endocrine system reboot, consider Symplex M or Symplex F, or Endopath M or Endopath F.? It is critical to cleanse the body for the endocrine system to have a fighting chance.
3: Foods, pathogens and physical scars.?
These things can and do have a direct effect on how well the thyroid is working.
Foods:? Today people have more allergies to food than ever before.? On the physical level of healing in the body, one way to help the body deal with allergies to food is with digestive enzymes.? Because people don?t chew enough and the parotid glands of many (necessary to produce digestive enzymes) are damaged from mercury dental fillings.? Because of damage to the parotid gland our body is not digesting our food properly.? If the protein from our food doesn?t get broken down and makes it into the blood we can have allergic reactions.? Enzymes are wonderful for people with allergies of any kind.? Not all enzymes products are good though and there are different kinds for different people.? Clinically, we use Multizyme, Zypan and Zymex.
Pathogens.? Viruses, bacteria,?parasites?and fungus can all affect thyroid function.? Many individual products can be used to boost the immune system and fight these pathogens.? One of the best products that we use is Immuplex.? It is like an organic whole food multivitamin for the immune system.? If the immune system is strong, it can defend itself against pathogens.? Probiotics are also wonderful such Lactic Acid Yeast and Prosymbiotic.
Scars.? The Chinese have known for a long time that physical scars can affect the flow of qi (energy) that is needed to make sure the organs and glands are functioning well physically and energetically.? A cold laser can be used to heal scars energetically.? Wheat Germ Oil applied topically two times per day for 1-2 month on scars also really helps.
4: The body can be sensitive or ?allergic? to its own hormones.?
Just as we can be allergic to food (which is energy the same as hormones), we can be sensitive to our own hormones.? The pioneering work of Dr. Devi Nambudripad, M.D., and NAET (Nambudripad?s Allergy Elimination Technique) have brought relief to many people struggling with allergies.? What I have found is that NAET has its limitations though.? Generally NAET only works into the second level of healing in the body (the energetic level).? Some allergies go much deeper into the body.? Her techniques have since spread and many have discovered that this can be done without the use of acupuncture needles.? If you would like more info on how to desensitize your body to many substances, please contact me for a more information.? This leads us to taking about the deepest layers of thyroid health.
5: The mental and emotional component to thyroid health.?
Allergic reactions actually can go into the 3rd?(mental/emotional), 4th?level (intuitive/family) and 5th?level (spiritual) levels of healing in the body (Dr. Dietrich Klinghart M.D., The Five Levels of Healing).?? Allergies can most strongly occur due to disturbing emotional events in our past.? If you have wheat in your system or are eating while you go through a negatively charged emotional event, the body can actual perceive the food as the threat and form an allergy against it.? These negative emotions accumulate and our body holds onto them.? If we hold onto this negative energy for a long time like resentment, anger, fears, pride, shame and guilt, etc?it becomes really heavy and eventually can manifest physically through some kind of symptom.? Removing the negative emotions from our subconscious using energetic techniques has a remarkable effect on health.
The thyroid, in ancient Ayurvedic medicine, is home of the 5th?chakra.? Our ability to communicate effectively and our creativity are associated with this chakra.? Humiliation, anger, hopelessness, guilt and shame are the emotions that most strongly have an affiliation with the thyroid.? Have you had any events in your past where you have felt these emotions?? Interestingly, homeopathy (Thyro-Chord, Thyropath, Endopath M and F), since it is an energetic form of healing, reaches deeply into the 3rd?level of healing in a way that physical herbs, supplements or food cannot.??? I would highly encourage you to see a practitioner that does EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), Faster EFT, Mental Field Therapy or Psychokinesiology to help your body let go of toxic negative emotions that may be damaging your health.? I do phone consultations and this energy work can be done over Skype.
Thyroid health is a passion of mine because I USED TO have hypothyroidism.? I was told I would have to take a synthetic hormone for the rest of my life.?? That didn?t sit well with me.? It may not sit well with you.? If you work on the five things above by cleaning up your diet, rebuilding the thyroid, detoxifying, and working on clearing out the accumulation of negative emotions you are holding onto from your past, I believe there is hope in getting your thyroid and endocrine system functioning well again on its own.? While these things aren?t a guarantee, they have helped many people restore full function of the thyroid gland naturally. ?The products listed above are only sold through health professionals to ensure they are used responsibly. ?If they interest you, please contact me for more details. ?As always, please do not stop taking any medication without the supervision and advice from your medical doctor.
