Customer Service Representative
RATE OF PAY: $13.55/hour
DEPARTMENT: Utility Billing STATUS: Full-time, Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Utility Billing Director HOURS: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., M-F
LOCATON: City Hall Utility Billing Department
The position of?Utility Billing Customer Service Representative is accountable for accurate?billing and collection of City water, sewer and garbage utilities, the maintenance of utility accounts and for extending excellent customer service to citizens and co-workers by answering questions and responding to and resolving problems and issues related to utility services and billings.
This position assists customers over the telephone and in person, sets up new utility accounts and performs computer data entry to update customer information. The position also reviews delinquent accounts to determine?if payments are being met?and orders shut-off of service for accounts with non-payment. A challenge for this position is in being able to perform multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions.
Incumbents are also challenged by the need to use tact and diplomacy when providing information to the public in order to effectively to resolve questions and concerns.
The position is a source of information to various departments and to utility billing customers. Due to the broad scope of departments whose billings are done?by this office, incumbents must be flexible in their ability to provide?needed information. They must be able to use clerical and secretarial skills in preparing reports, drafting letters and other correspondence, and must be timely in responding to the need for information.
Equipment used includes computer terminal, typewriter, 10-key calculator, adding machine, microfiche printer/reader, two-way radio, copy machine and fax machines. For a detailed job description, click here.
Qualifications
Strong customer service skills and excellent written and oral communication skills are required?for this position. Other skills required include account analysis, record keeping and documentation, accounting skills (specifically cash receipting and balancing), and the ability to multi-task and work well under pressure.
Requires experience in computer data entry and Microsoft Office. Candidates must be able to accurately use a 10-key calculator by touch and type 45 wpm. A typing test must be taken at the Department of Labor and submitted upon application.
