Autopsy: Death of handcuffed man in Ark. a suicide

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? An autopsy report released Monday lists the death of a man shot in the head while his hands were cuffed behind him in an Arkansas patrol car as a suicide.

The state crime lab report, signed by three medical examiners, said the muzzle of a gun was placed against the right side of 21-year-old Chavis Carter's head when it was fired. Jonesboro police released the report to The Associated Press and other news organizations under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The report said the manner of death was ruled a suicide based on autopsy findings and investigative conclusions from the Jonesboro police department.

"He was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head," the report says.

Police have said officers frisked Carter twice after a traffic stop without finding a gun before he was fatally shot July 28.

The autopsy report comes days after police released video recorded the night Carter was shot in Jonesboro, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock. Part of the video showed Carter being patted down and ended before officers found Carter slumped over and bleeding in the back of a patrol car as was described in a police report. Police later released additional video they said came after Carter was found.

Carter's death came after police stopped a truck in which he was riding. The driver and another passenger eventually were allowed to go, but police said Carter had an outstanding arrest warrant. Court records show it had to do with a drug charge out of Mississippi's DeSoto County.

Carter was searched twice and police said they found a small amount of marijuana, but no gun.

After the first search, an officer put Carter into a patrol car without handcuffing him. He was later searched again, handcuffed and returned to the same car.

Officers a short time later saw Carter slumped over in the backseat and covered in blood, according to the report, which concluded he had managed to conceal a handgun with which he shot himself. He later died at a hospital, and the report listed his death as a suicide.

Brownlee brothers receive letters from pensioner ... - BBC World News

London 2012 Olympic medal-winning brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee have revealed they both received letters from an 89-year-old pensioner following their successes ? including a ?10 note for each of them. Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee won gold and bronze respectively at London 2012 (Picture: PA) The triathletes, who won gold and bronze respectively at their home Games, were received by a crowd of tens of thousands of fans when they returned home to Leeds earlier in the week. But the brothers said the letters have touched them the most. ?He wrote that he had watched us and that it was one of the best things he had seen in his life,? Alistair said. ?He also included a tenner for both of us and said that he wasn?t putting his name or address on it so that we couldn?t send it back! ?I don?t know what I?m going to do with it yet. I?ve been so busy with media and everything else since that I haven?t had a chance to do anything with it. ?I?ve had the letter in one pocket and my gold medal in the other.? Alistair Brownlee took triathlon gold ahead of Spain?s Gomez, but a 15second penalty put paid to Jonny?s silver hopes (Picture: Getty) Fans have celebrated the Brownlees? success in different ways, with one of their neighbours in Leeds ? Peter Moran ? painting the postbox outside his house gold in their honour, before Royal Mail quickly returned it to traditional red. But Alistair and Jonny won?t have long to take in their Olympic achievements, with Jonny competing in Stockholm next week and Alistair flying to America for a triathlon next month. ?It?s been pretty hectic since [the Olympics]. We?ve only had a brief chance to see our parents,? Alistair added. ?I?ve started training again and initially it is quite easy because you get back into a bit of normality.? Alistair and Jonny Brownlee wasted no time getting back to training (Picture: Getty) The brothers had even returned to training before the Olympics had finished. Last Sunday, as the Games were coming to an end and preparing for the closing ceremony, BBC presenter Mark Chapman tweeted: ?Want to know what makes a medallist? ?In the sun, on a party day, the Brownlee brothers have just gone past me on a training run.?

Neighbourhood income deprivation has a strong negative effect on altruistic behaviour when measured by a 'lost letter' experiment, according to new UCL research published in PLOS ONE.

Researchers from UCL Anthropology used the lost letter technique to measure altruism across 20 London neighbourhoods by dropping 300 letters on the pavement and recording whether they arrived at their destination. The stamped letters were addressed by hand to a study author's home address with a gender neutral name, and were dropped face-up and during rain free weekdays.

The results show a strong negative effect of neighbourhood income deprivation on altruistic behaviour, with an average of 87% of letters dropped in the wealthier neighbourhoods being returned compared to only an average 37% return rate in poorer neighbourhoods.

Co-author Jo Holland said: "This is the first large scale study investigating cooperation in an urban environment using the lost letter technique. This technique, first used in the 1960s by the American social psychologist Stanley Milgram, remains one of the best ways of measuring truly altruistic behaviour, as returning the letter doesn't benefit that person and actually incurs the small hassle of taking the letter to a post box.

Co-author Professor Ruth Mace added: "Our study attempts to understand how the socio-economic characteristics of a neighbourhood affect the likelihood of people in a neighbourhood acting altruistically towards a stranger. The results show a clear trend, with letters dropped in the poorest neighbourhoods having 91% lower odds of being returned than letters dropped in the wealthiest neighbourhoods. This suggests that those living in poor neighbourhoods are less inclined to behave altruistically toward their neighbours."

As well as measuring the number of letters returned, the researchers also looked at how other neighbourhood characteristics may help to explain the variation in altruistic behaviour - including ethnic composition and population density - but did not find them to be good predictors of lost letter return.

Corresponding author Antonio Silva said: "The fact that ethnic composition does not play a role on the likelihood of a letter being returned is particularly interesting, as other studies have suggested that ethnic mixing negatively affects social cohesion, but in our sampled London neighbourhoods this does not appear to be true.

"The level of altruism observed in a population is likely to vary according to its context. Our hypothesis that area level socio-economic characteristics could determine the levels of altruism found in individuals living in an area is confirmed by our results. Our overall findings replicate and expand on previous studies which use similar methodology.

"We show in this study that individuals living in poor neighbourhoods are less altruistic than individuals in wealthier neighbourhoods. However, the effect of income deprivation may be confounded by crime, as the poorer neighbourhoods tend to have higher rates crime which may lead to people in those neighbourhoods being generally more suspicious and therefore less likely to pick up a lost letter.

"Further research should focus on attempting to disentangle these two factors, possibly by comparing equally deprived neighbourhoods with different levels of crime. Although this study uses only one measure of altruism and therefore we should be careful in interpreting these findings, it does give us an interesting perspective on altruism in an urban context and provides a sound experimental model on which to base future studies."

Medicare costs too much, but how to rein it in?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney agree there has to be a limit to how much seniors pay for Medicare, but they're worlds apart on how to make that happen.

You wouldn't know it from the accusations they hurl on the campaign trail, but that is the real heart of the argument between the two leaders and their political parties.

There will be consequences for seniors and the nation's health care industry no matter which way the debate is decided, because both sides agree Medicare spending must be controlled.

Obama relies heavily on cutting payments, the amount hospitals might get for a heart bypass or how much a radiologist is reimbursed for reading an MRI.

Romney would give future retirees a fixed amount of money to pick their health insurance from competing private plans or a government program, thereby limiting taxpayers' financial exposure.

Some questions and answers about both approaches, and their pros and cons:

Q: Obama cuts Medicare by $716 billion, so how much does Romney cut?

A: There's no precise dollar-for-dollar comparison.

Obama's cuts to hospitals, drug companies and other providers are phasing in now as part of his health care law.

Romney has largely embraced his running mate Paul Ryan's Medicare overhaul plan. If implemented, Romney-Ryan wouldn't go into full swing until 2023, and key details have not been spelled out.

Nonetheless, the Congressional Budget Office did some long-range calculations on the Wisconsin congressman's latest plan.

The nonpartisan analysis found that Medicare spending would rise under both current policies that reflect Obama's approach and under Ryan's plan. But Ryan's way would grow Medicare far less.

In 2040, Medicare spending for a 67-year-old would average $14,300 under current policies, which include Obama's health care law, and $9,500 under the Republican plan. (It's about $6,000 now.)

The differences would grow noticeably bigger with time. In 2050, Medicare spending for a similar retiree would be $19,100 under current policies, and $11,100 under Ryan's plan.

That amounts to a "substantial cut in spending" compared with other policy scenarios, the budget office said.

Q: So, Ryan's plan ? the one Romney agrees with ? would cut Medicare more?

A: That's what Democrats claim. They're calling the plan a massive cost shift to retirees. (Under Romney's plan, those now 55 and older could stay in traditional Medicare, while those 54 and younger would go into the new program.)

Republicans say their plan is not about shifting costs.

They point out that other major industrialized countries are getting the same or better quality medical care for less money. Because Ryan's fixed insurance payment to retirees would limit the amount of taxpayer financing going into Medicare, it would finally force everyone, from the medical center CEO to the individual retiree, to be more cost-conscious about health care decisions.

Backers of the Romney-Ryan approach say its competitive design would help bring down costs for everyone. Romney says his goal is to preserve Medicare.

The budget office says the implications of the plan are unclear, because they would depend on specifics not yet fully spelled out as well as the reaction of hospitals, insurers, drug companies and other industry players.

Q: What are the risks of what Romney and Ryan are proposing?

A: The main risk is that the government payment for health insurance won't keep pace with health care inflation, shifting an ever-growing share of costs to people on fixed incomes, or forcing them to settle for lower quality service.

Think of it as being similar to the difference between a traditional pension plan that provides a defined benefit, and a 401(k) plan where individual circumstances and choices come into play.

Leaning against such risks, Ryan adjusts the government insurance payment so that it would grow a little faster than the overall economy. His plan also envisions added help for seniors in poor health.

That still may not be enough.

Ryan has done two versions of his plan with prominent Democrats, and both involved a more generous formula for adjusting insurance payments than what he steered through the Republican-led House.

Q: What are the risks of Obama's approach?

A: If the government just keeps cutting payments, Medicare will start looking more and more like Medicaid, the much leaner program for low-income people.

Doctors will stop taking new Medicare patients. Many hospitals and nursing homes would start losing money, and some may have to shut down. Innovation would slow, as drug makers and medical device manufacturers think twice about bringing new products to market. Seniors would have problems getting appointments or face waiting times for elective surgery. Quality would decline.

That's why the administration has launched dozens of experiments to deliver quality care for lower cost. But it could take years to see results.

Q: So where do Romney and Obama actually agree on anything about Medicare?

A: There are four big points to keep in mind.

Both agree there has to be an overall limit on the growth of Medicare spending. (Obama would use a powerful new board created by the health care law to ratchet down payments. He has yet to name the panel; Republicans are calling it a "rationing board.")

Both agree that wealthy beneficiaries should pay more for their Medicare.

Romney and Ryan want to gradually increase the eligibility age to 67, instead of the current 65. In closed-door budget negotiations with Congress last year, Obama hinted he might be willing to do the same as part of an overall debt reduction package.

Both would shift additional costs to beneficiaries. Obama has proposed higher deductibles for outpatient care, new copayments for home health, and policies to discourage the use of "Medigap" policies that can lower out-of-pocket costs ? particularly for newly joining baby boomers.

The boomers would do well to pay attention: Medicare will change no matter who wins the White House. Unless lawmakers cut spending or raise taxes, the program's giant trust fund for inpatient care will go broke in 2024.

Facebook Investors Cash Out

Facebook Inc.'s stock price plumbed a new low Thursday as early investors were freed to sell some of their stakes, leaving the once-prized stock down nearly 50% from its debut and forcing executives of the young Internet giant to pump up morale.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is no longer brushing off concern about his company's sinking stock price, acknowledging to employees for the first time that the selloff could hurt them.

Getty Images

On its first day of trading in May, Facebook shares closed at $38.23.

Mr. Zuckerberg has long exhorted employees not to pay attention to the stock price, instead pushing them to focus on developing the social network. But in a companywide meeting earlier this month, he conceded that it may be "painful" to watch as investors continue to retreat from Facebook's stock, according to people familiar with the meeting.

The meeting was part of a new effort over recent weeks to buck up morale.

Mr. Zuckerberg's turnabout may have steeled employees ahead of Thursday, when some early Facebook investors?but not employees?were able to cash out for the first time since the company's initial public offering in May.

Facebook shares hit a new low on Thursday, falling 6.3% to $19.87 as more than 271 million shares?or nearly 13% of those outstanding?became eligible for sale.

Rules that restricted investors from selling their stakes immediately after Facebook's IPO expired only for those who sold stock in the offering. The select group includes venture-capital firms such as Accel Partners and Greylock Partners and Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Tiger Global Management.

Employees who own Facebook shares are only able to watch at this point. Lockup expirations in October, November and December will allow Mr. Zuckerberg and other employees to sell more than 1.4 billion shares. The biggest lockup expiration, freeing more than one billion shares, is set for Nov. 14. The last lockup expires next May.

For many employees, however, selling shares later this year may not be a palatable option. Facebook's stock has so far fallen about 48% since the IPO, pushing its market capitalization down to about $42.6 billion. Including restricted stock units and stock options, Facebook's value is about $54 billion.

At Thursday's price, some of the mutual funds that invested in Facebook before its IPO are underwater, or showing paper losses. They include mutual-fund giant T. Rowe Price, which bought into Facebook in early 2011 for roughly $25 a share, according to regulatory filings.

Other pre-public investors are close to breaking even. Goldman Sachs, one of the IPO's underwriters, invested in December 2010, along with Russia's Digital Sky Technologies, at $20.85 a share, slightly higher than Thursday's price.

Earlier investments in Facebook remain highly profitable. Accel Partners invested $12.7 million in Facebook in 2005. It sold more than 57 million shares in Facebook's IPO, for proceeds of $2.2 billion, and after the IPO owned more than 143 million shares, valued at nearly $2.9 billion at Thursday's price.

The investors either declined to comment or couldn't be reached Thursday.

More than 156.5 million shares changed hands Thursday, more than four times the recent daily average.

At Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters Thursday, some employees said they aren't concerned about the current losses since they believe in the vision of the company. "I'll take a short-term loss now," said one employee who owns Facebook stock that is worth less than when he received it.

Another employee said that while he hasn't heard anyone talking about the stock price at headquarters Thursday, "obviously it's not great though when most employees bought in at the higher prices."

But in recent weeks, employees who weren't initially focused on the stock price had started expressing concern. Senior management realized it was time to do something about morale, believing that the falling stock could begin to distract workers, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Earlier this month, Mr. Zuckerberg began a companywide meeting by saying he doesn't want to open meetings talking about the stock price, since volatility is to be expected, but he said he wanted to acknowledge that the stock's slump is "painful" for some employees, according to people familiar with the meeting.

Mr. Zuckerberg went on to tell employees that the press doesn't know the company's future plans, and if they did, they would have the same faith in Facebook's ability to fulfill its lofty stock-market valuation. He said that investments the company has made over the last six to 12 months will soon bear fruit, the people said.

During a question-and-answer session after Mr. Zuckerberg's speech, one employee asked the CEO if employees are now allowed to talk about the stock price, according to the person familiar with the meeting. Yes, said Mr. Zuckerberg. People should feel comfortable talking about it, he said, but the price shouldn't be the focus.

Mr. Zuckerberg's new show of sympathy toward shareholding employees was a marked change from his earlier disdain for stock-price talk.

On the day of the IPO, Mr. Zuckerberg posted a picture to his Facebook wall of a poster that said, "stay focused, keep shipping." The halls of Facebook offices across the country are now splattered with the saying and employees have repeated the mantra since.

Mr. Zuckerberg addressed his employees a few days later by saying jokingly, "So, you've heard we're firing David?" referring to Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman, as Mr. Ebersman sat a few feet away, according to people familiar with the meeting. He then said, "We're very proud of our deals team and we think they did a great job."

That tone began to change as Facebook's stock dropped toward $20 a share.

Facebook's vice president of partnerships, Dan Rose, earlier this month at the company meeting told employees he knows the company can't pretend that people won't worry about the stock price, according to these people.

Mr. Rose recounted a story about when he was at Amazon.com Inc. and the stock price tanked, these people said.

He said he had young children and was concerned about his ability to provide for them, but he asked himself, "Do we have the right people in place and is our mission worthwhile?"

Mr. Rose said he asked himself the same questions about Facebook and believes the answer to both questions is yes.

(AP) ? Paul McCartney has sent support to a Russian punk band whose members face prison for a stunt against President Vladimir Putin.

In a letter released Thursday, the former Beatle urged three members of all-female band Pussy Riot to "stay strong" and called on authorities to allow them freedom of speech.

McCartney said that "I and many others like me who believe in free speech will do everything in our power to support you and the idea of artistic freedom."

The band members have been in jail for more than five months because of an anti-Putin prank in Moscow's main cathedral, and face a maximum seven years in jail.

Celebrities including Madonna and Bjork have called for them to be freed.

A judge is due to rule on their case Friday.

Camp aims to lift clown frowns during slow economy

ONTARIO, Calif. (AP) ? Several dozen clowns from around the U.S. and Canada gathered to learn new magic tricks, sharpen their punch lines and train would-be professional buffoons at a clown camp in Southern California.

The annual California Clown Campin' event at a hotel in Ontario, Calif., brought together veteran clowns with decades of experience and those who have never worn a red nose or a pair of oversized shoes.

The weeklong event earlier this month featured classes on balloon tying, pie-throwing, face-painting, comedy writing, magic tricks and character development. It ended with a free public show for residents.

Clowns say the annual event helps keep their skills sharp even as the economy has led to a drop in paid gigs.

Iraq VP death squad trial to wrap up in Sept

An Iraqi court will next month hear concluding remarks from prosecutors and the defence team in the death squad trial of fugitive Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a judge said on Tuesday.

The trial, which began in May, has been over the assassinations of two security officials and a lawyer, the first of around 150 charges levelled against Hashemi and his bodyguards.

A statement posted on the vice president's website on August 10 said he was in Doha, Qatar. He is being tried in absentia.

"We decided to postpone the trial until September 9, after we heard the testimony of all the defendants, and the next session will be for the prosecutor and the defence team (to present their closing remarks)," said the judge presiding over the case.

Hashemi, one of the country's most senior Sunni officials, has dismissed all the charges against him as politically motivated, and the accusations have raised sectarian tensions when the accusations were first made by Iraq's Shiite-led government.

He fled to Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region when the charges were made in December, as US troops were pulling out of the country.

The trial, which began May 15, has previously heard testimony that silenced pistols were found in raids on Hashemi's house and that of his son-in-law, while bodyguards and other officials say they were offered money, or were coerced, into carrying out attacks on the vice president's orders.

After fleeing to Kurdistan, which refused to hand him over, Hashemi embarked on a regional tour that took him to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Benson Henderson?s title defense, B.J. Penn vs. Rory MacDonald and ?Shogun? vs. ?Mauler? will headline UFC on Fox 5

The last two UFC on Fox 5 cards have been lackluster, and there hasn't been a title fight on the network since the UFC's debut there. UFC on Fox 5 will change those two trends. USA Today reports the next network show will be on Dec. 8 at a site to be determined.

The three fights added to the show's slate:

-- Benson Henderson will defend his lightweight heavyweight (Ed. note -- Sorry, still recovering from Olympics) belt against Nate Diaz, who is riding a three-fight win streak. Diaz earned the title shot with a submission of Jim Miller in May.

-- In the co-main event, Alexander Gustafsson will fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Gustafsson has five wins in a row at light heavyweight, but has been ignored by the UFC for a title shot. Perhaps a win over Shogun, who just beat Brandon Vera on the last Fox card, will do the trick.

-- B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald's bout, which was postponed because of a cut MacDonald sustained in training, was rescheduled to this card.

With a title fight, a possible title contender's fight and the mainstream starpower of Penn, the UFC is giving Fox a welcome change from the less-than-thrilling recent cards. Though the UFC reported an increase in ratings from their May show to the August one, it was modest. The May show also experienced a steep drop-off in ratings from the two previous shows on Fox, so the improvement shown on the August show still didn't get the UFC anywhere near the four million viewers who watched the first two UFC on Fox shows.

Will you tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Indian police arrest protesting yoga guru

Indian police on Monday arrested famed TV yoga guru and anti-corruption campaigner Baba Ramdev as he attempted to lead a procession of thousands of supporters to parliament.

Ramdev, an eccentric saffron-robed holy man with a yoga empire that spans the globe, began a protest in New Delhi last Thursday demanding the government do more to repatriate illicit money stashed by Indians in foreign accounts.

Police parked buses and erected barricades across the route taken by Ramdev and his supporters, many of whom had come from his home town of Haridwar in the foothills of the Himalayas.

"Oust Congress -- save the country," Ramdev declared to supporters.

Ramdev and activist Anna Hazare have made joint efforts to mobilise Indians to fight corruption, following a string of major scandals that have tarnished the Congress-led government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Hazare, a former army driver who models his appearance on independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, led a huge protest movement in 2011 but his popularity and ability to tap into public anger have since waned.

Ramdev, whose current protest has been largely ignored by the government -- unlike in 2011 when senior ministers held meetings with him -- said he had wanted to march to parliament to have the voice of his supporters heard by lawmakers.

Ramdev and other arrested protesters were transported to a stadium in the centre of New Delhi as thousands of supporters crowded the streets, shouting "hail mother India".

They followed the guru to the stadium barely a kilometre from where he was arrested, creating a big traffic jam in one of New Delhi's busiest office districts.

Initially police had planned to hold Ramdev in a stadium on the outskirts of the capital. But shifting him there proved impossible "due to the traffic jam and monsoon showers", police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told AFP.

Police said late Monday they were releasing the guru and his supporters but they refused to leave the stadium, claiming that the protest had taken a "decisive turn," according to local media reports.

Ramdev's refusal to quit the stadium was causing worries for authorities who were putting in place tight security arrangements for India's Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

India's ruling Congress party, meanwhile, charged that Ramdev was being used by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the country's main opposition.

"The country has seen today that the masks have fallen and the real faces have been revealed," Congress spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi said after BJP president Nitin Gadkari delivered a speech of support at Ramdev's rally.

"The BJP president has gone there and they (Ramdev's supporters) say they have no relationship with political parties. I am saying the masks are off," he said.

Egypt TV boss, journalist to be tried for insulting Morsi

Television boss Tawfiq Okasha and newspaper journalist Islam Afifi will be tried for "incitement" and insulting Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, the prosecutor's office said on Monday.

Okasha, owner of the private channel Al-Faraeen, is accused of "incitement to murder" of the Islamist president, said Adel Saeed, a spokesman for the prosecutor general.

Afifi, editor-in-chief of Al-Dustour newspaper, is accused of having published "false information" deemed insulting to Morsi and which could also "undermine and destabilise" Egypt, he added.

Okasha and Afifi must appear before the Cairo criminal court, he said.

On Sunday, the prosecution imposed a travel ban on the pair, prohibiting them from travelling outside Egypt while they are being investigated for anti-Morsi remarks after complaints were lodged against them.

Okasha hosts a controversial talk show on his private television channel and is known to be staunchly anti-Islamist and opposed to Morsi, who was fielded by the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party in the May-June presidential election.

Last week, authorities ordered the show off the air for a month for "incitement to murder of President Morsi and to overthrow of the government."

And on Saturday, they ordered copies of Al-Dustour seized after complaints that they contained remarks deemed insulting to Morsi.

Motorola Droid 4 ICS update pushing out, brings global roaming and remote diagnostics

Droid 4

A couple weeks back we saw the Motorola Droid 4 in the midst of it's soak test procedure for Ice Cream Sandwich, and today it appears that the update is pushing, at least for a few. Officially, the support page lists the update as "coming soon", but we've gotten a report or two that it's already inbound. We'll go over the changes in a bit, but it's worth mentioning that the build of Blur (or not Blur) has been updated to the same version we saw in the RAZR's Ice Cream Sandwich update. We like it when things get refined, so we're not complaining, but if you get a bit lost with the new look and feel hit the forums for some help. Moving on to the details --

  • Device is enabled for Global Roaming.
  • Integration of new version of  Backup Assistant Plus.
  • Mobile IM has been removed.
  • Color for Facebook application is preloaded.
  • Enhanced Customer Support with Verizon Remote Diagnostics.
  • Improved Stability and connectivity with Email.
  • Successfully download and save ringtones.
  • Mobile Hotspot – Improved connectivity.
  • Reduced device resets and power cycling.
  • Camera quality has been improved for better pictures.
  • Improved My Gallery performance.
  • Voice Mail Notification shows the correct of unread messages.
  • Updated Mobile Hotspots Icon.
  • Visual Voice Mail shortcut on home screen changed to a standard voicemail shortcut.
  • Clear Contact pictures are displayed for phonebook contacts.

The version number is now 6.16.217.XT894.Verizon.en.US, and the update checks in at about in at 360MB. We're not sure how widespread the rollout is just yet, but to check if you have it ready and waiting hit the settings and look in About phone > system update. When you see it, be sure to sound off and let folks know how it went for you. Hit the source link below for the full details as well as detailed update instructions.

Senior Helpers of Central Texas: A New Look at Living Wills

My father was in a coma, hooked up to a ventilator, and I had to make a tough call.
His living will expressed his desires for a few black-and-white situations: He didn't want to be kept alive if he was terminally ill, or in an irreversible vegetative state. But the situation I faced wasn't so simple. The neurologist said he would wake up from the coma, but there was a good chance he would have severe brain damage. How much of a chance? The doctors couldn't say.

Doctors and nurses say my heart-wrenching experience is typical of the complexity of real-life bedside decisions. An estimated 25% to 30% of Americans have filled out living wills, documents that spell out wishes for medical treatment. But ethicists say the typically simplistic documents aren't the solution many hoped they would be. Life-prolonging medical technology has far outstripped doctors' ability to predict outcomes. The hardest choices center on when quality of life will be so diminished that death is preferable.

As such, some health organizations are trying to improve living wills, allowing for more flexibility and nuance. Some ethicists, meanwhile, are de-emphasizing living wills altogether and focusing on appointing a trusted family member or friend as your health-care agent.

"Most of us have come to the conclusion that the way to get over the vagueness is to get someone to speak for you," says Robert M. Veatch, a professor of medical ethics at Georgetown University's Kennedy Institute of Ethics in Washington, D.C.

Living wills were created in the 1960s and gained national attention in the 1970s when a young woman, Karen Ann Quinlan, following alcohol and drug use at a party, was left in a vegetative state, raising alarms about medical technology keeping people alive in hopeless circumstances.

"We had a naive view that if you had a document, that would solve the problem," says Daniel Callahan, co-founder and president emeritus of the Hastings Center, a Garrison, N.Y., nonprofit that was an early champion of living wills. "In practice," he says, "all sorts of problems arise" that aren't spelled out in the documents.

When Paul Shalline, an active 86-year-old who regularly bested his grandchildren at ping pong, was unable to communicate after a severe stroke in March, treatment decisions fell to his daughter, Robin. Ms. Shalline, a 57-year-old teacher from Monkton, Vt., says her father had a living will but had never talked to her about his wishes. "There is so much gray area," she says. "You'd hope the living will would spell it all out, but it doesn't."

His living will called for withdrawing life support if there was no reasonable expectation of regaining a "meaningful quality of life" but didn't describe what that meant, she says. Ms. Shalline, when told by doctors that her father could be blind in one eye, unable to feed himself and might never walk again, made the decision to withdraw the ventilator based on "what I knew about his life." Mr. Shalline, who loved Wiffle ball and had recently helped build a staircase, was "proud of his 'physicalness,' " she says. He died March 18.

It is hard enough, under the best of circumstances, to know what your family member would want in a particular situation. But add to that the fact that even top doctors can't predict outcomes very well.

Lee H. Schwamm, vice chairman of the neurology department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Mr. Shalline was treated, says that even when he thinks he can predict a patient's outcome after a stroke, he is wrong 15% to 20% of the time on major outcome measures, such as whether a patient will be able to walk again. "I've never seen a living will?and I've seen a lot?that speaks to this question of diagnostic uncertainty," says Dr. Schwamm.
Living Documents
You can get a living will from a lawyer or download it from the Internet. Many focus on permanent comas and clearly hopeless conditions. Florida's statute-suggested living will, for example, directs life-prolonging treatments to be stopped if there is "no reasonable medical probability" of recovery from a terminal condition or persistent vegetative state. Florida, like most states, allows you to write your own living will; a few states, such as New Hampshire, specify that living wills must use a state-approved form. (A bill now being considered in New Hampshire would make the state form optional.)

A number of efforts have been made to improve on the standard-style living will. A document available online from Lifecare Directives LLC, Las Vegas, for example, spells out several levels of cognitive decline from coma to mental "confusion" that require 24-hour supervision, and asks if you would want life support if your brain failed that much. The document also gives you an option to say whether you want doctors to be "positively certain," "certain to a high degree" or "reasonably certain" that you will never recover before pulling the plug.

A simpler but also innovative approach is the popular Five Wishes living will. Five Wishes is written at a sixth- to seventh-grade level, says Paul Malley, president of Aging with Dignity, a nonprofit that distributes the document. Despite its simplicity, the Five Wishes living will addresses issues many others don't?for example, asking if you want pain medication to relieve suffering even if it makes you sleepy. It also has a blank space where people can specify a state in which they wouldn't want to be kept alive.

"Some people have a phrase that pops out in their mind: 'If I'm in the same condition as Aunt Mary,' " Mr. Malley says. Originally written in 1997, the Five Wishes will has been available online in an interactive format since last year.
Open to Interpretation
The problem with living wills is that most people can't articulate what they want, says ethicist Angela Fagerlin, co-director of the University of Michigan-affiliated Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine in Ann Arbor. And even if they can, family members often don't properly interpret those wishes.

In a 400-patient study published in 2001, Dr. Fagerlin and colleagues found that family members who were presented with nine hypothetical scenarios correctly predicted patient wishes about 70% of the time, whether or not the patient had filled out a living will.

Can you forgo such documents completely? Mr. Callahan, who championed living wills in their early days, says he doesn't have one, preferring instead to give decision-making power to his wife, to whom he has said simply, "When in doubt, don't treat."

A health-care agent?a trusted family member, for instance?could supplant the need for a living will. Under the legal doctrine of "substituted judgment," health-care agents must try to make the decision you would if you could, says Alan Meisel, the director of the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at the University of Pittsburgh. Anything?a phone conversation, a list of instructions or a formal living will?can be used as evidence of your wishes, he adds.

As for my father, we postponed the decision, and he woke up, sharp as a tack, able to make his own decisions.

Miss Johannes is a writer in Boston. She can be reached at next@wsj.com.

Very Realistic 1/6 Human Skull!

OK I'm not known for my photography skills so I hope I can do this justice! I ordered this 1/6 skull for my Ghost Rider 2 custom build and received it a few minutes ago, I was so blown away by the accuracy that I thought I'd share it. I used to collect real skulls (animal) and this even feels like real bone! The light weight gives it a quality feel as opposed to the usual solid cheap resin casts. The paint apps are great too!

I bought it here:
