If left unchecked, the virus will prevent users from having any sort of internet connectivity -- they'll have to call their service providers for help deleting the bug and regaining internet access.
Facebook and Google are on the users' side, however. If someone appears to have an infected computer, the sites will display a warning message that displays "Your computer or network might be infected," along with a link for more info.
If you want to perform a check to see if this malware has taken up residence in your computer, you can run a check via a website maintained by a group hired by the FBI: DCWG.org.
