Electric Water Heater Considerations for Homeowners

Electric is the water heater power of choice today for many builders and homeowners. An electric water heater has several advantages over a fuel-burning system and can compensate for most of its disadvantages. Electricity also widens the range of options for implementing water heating needs, giving homeowners a number of aspects to take into consideration. This article examines these aspects and shows how to make reasoned decisions regarding water heating in the home.

The standard electric water heater operates via submerged heating elements, one main element near the bottom of the tank (where cold water enters) and another, on-demand element near the top (where hot water exits). Each element uses 4500 watts of power, but they are never on at the same time. When demand exceeds the capacity of the lower element, the top element comes on (thus disabling the lower element) to heat the water in the vicinity of where it exits the tank.

Compare this with the operation of a gas- or oil-powered heater. The water also enters the tank near the bottom and exits at the top, but a flame is applied below the tank to accomplish the rise in temperature. The burner requires adequate combustion air and the exhaust has to be vented outside, usually through the roof. Such venting also has to be supplied sufficient draft air or exhaust is apt to flow down and back out around the top of the tank. Another aspect of fuel-burning water heaters is that when they are placed in a garage, a common location, they must meet flammable vapor ignition resistant (FVIR) regulations.

Owners of electrical heaters have no such combustion air, draft air, venting, or FVIR issues to worry about. These devices are therefore easily maintained and need little access; they can be tucked away in a corner. About the only need to call a plumberis for installation of the thing or to tend to a malfunctioning temperature-pressure release valve.

The primary disadvantage of electric heaters is their relatively slow recovery time. Oil-burning heaters recover the fastest, followed by gas-burning ones. To equalize somewhat these differences, heaters are sized in proportion to their recovery time. So electrical heaters are the largest, a potential problem for homeowners who wish to replace their existing oil or gas heater with an electric one in the same spot.

Going electrical opens up the possibility for using the newer technological innovations in water heating. One such innovation is adapting the heat pump, essentially an air conditioner running in reverse, to transfer heat that is captured in the surrounding air into water rather than into air in a different location. These devices come as stand-alone units (i.e., with their own tanks) or as add-ons to existing tanks. Because they take advantage of the latent heat of vaporization, they tend to be more efficient than conventional electrical water heaters.

This improved efficiency comes at the price of greater need for periodic maintenance, which in turn requires good access. This means that the water heater can't be tucked away in the corner anymore. Heat pump technology also demands about a thousand cubic feet of surrounding air from which to extract heat, so it must be in a more open environment. Furthermore, if the device is in livable space, the heat extraction will lower the temperature in that space and increase a heating demand.

Another approach is the on-demand electrical water heater, somewhat limited in its capacity but a nice solution for certain circumstances. For more information on it and all electric water heaters, click here.

Homeowners have so many water heating options these days that it can be difficult to make the best choice. We have discussed electrical technologies in some detail, but fuel-burning appliances are still in wide use and appropriate solutions in many cases. Rutgers trial: Ravi to make statement before sentencing

Former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi will make a statement to a packed New Brunswick, N.J. courtroom today before he is sentenced.

In March, Ravi was found guilty of a hate crime for using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate Tyler Clementi.

Ravi, 20, faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and any jail time will likely also mean deportation for the Indian native.

Ravi was convicted of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, witness tampering and hindering arrest, stemming from his role in activating the webcam to peek at Clementi's date with a man in the dorm room on Sept. 19, 2010.

Ravi was also convicted of encouraging others to spy during a second date, on Sept. 21, 2010, and intimidating Clementi for being gay.

The defendant will address the court today, sources told ABC News.

His statement will join others, including members of Clementi's family, who are expected to make victim impact statements.

In recent days, several prominent gay activists have made public pleas for Ravi to not be sent to prison.

Judge Glenn Berman began the proceedings today by noting the court had received a box full of petitions seeking a pardon for Ravi.

Some of the petitions were addressed to President Obama, but the judge said the president has no ability to pardon someone for a state crime.

Some of the petitions were addressed to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who would have the authority to pardon someone for a state crime.

Clementi's case gained national attention when he committed suicide shortly after the spying by jumping off the George Washington Bridge Sept. 22, 2010. Ravi is not charged in connection with Clementi's death.

Three of the convictions carried a sentence of five to 10 years in prison. Because Ravi is a citizen of India, and is in the U.S. on a green card, he could be deported following his sentencing. The U.S. deports most criminals convicted of felonies, with the exception of thefts of amounts under $10,000.

Ravi had previously rejected a plea deal that would have spared him any jail time or the threat of deportation, but put him on probation and would have required him to perform community service.

Ravi was found not guilty of some subparts of the 15 counts of bias intimidation, attempted invasion of privacy, and attempted bias intimidation, but needed only to be found guilty of one part of each count to be convicted.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Stephen Strasburg took a swing and looked in amazement as the baseball carried over the left-field wall.

If Strasburg's first major league homer came as a surprise, his performance on the mound did not. With Strasburg leading the way, the Washington Nationals beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 Sunday to avert a three-game sweep.

In addition to his 2-for-2 performance at the plate, Strasburg (4-1) struck out eight in five innings before being lifted by manager Davey Johnson, who said the pitcher mentioned tightness in his biceps.

"I don't care who it was, if I find out they have tightness, they're out," Johnson said. "I talked to him later in the game. He said it relaxed a bit and was a lot better. I'm not as concerned when it's in the biceps."

Strasburg attributed the soreness in part to working too hard in the days following his previous start.

"The biceps is fine," he said. "It's just throwing a lot of pitches early, then we put up a lot of runs and stuff. I just got a little tired, got a little tight, but that's nothing different than any other outing."

Strasburg sent an 0-2 pitch from Wei-Yin Chen into the Baltimore bullpen in the fourth inning to put the Nationals ahead 5-3. After dusting off his home run trot and returning to the dugout, he responded to a curtain call by waving to the crowd of 41,918.

"Shocking, that's for sure," Strasburg said of his clout. "I feel like in (batting practice) I have to swing a lot harder to hit it out. I just somehow ran into one."

He was almost embarrassed about his trip around the bases and subsequent climb up the dugout steps.

"I'm not big for going out there and showboating," Strasburg said. "It was great, but I know my place. I'm not a real hitter out there so I'm not going to go out there and act like I do it all the time."

The hard-throwing Strasburg had five hits in 40 big league at-bats before Sunday. He singled and scored in the third inning, then followed a shot by Jesus Flores with one of his own in the fourth.

"I didn't expect Stras to hit a breaking ball," Johnson said. "He doesn't usually see breaking balls. (Third base coach) Bo Porter came in after and said we found a left fielder."

Known more for his pitching than his hitting, Strasburg excelled at both. The right-hander allowed three runs, one earned, four hits and a walk in his first career appearance against Baltimore. He retired the last 10 batters he faced.

Since returning from elbow ligament replacement surgery last September, Strasburg is 5-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 14 starts.

Danny Espinosa also homered, and Bryce Harper drove in two runs and scored three for the Nationals.

Chen (4-1) yielded six runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings and absorbed his first major league loss. The Taiwan native was vying to become the first Baltimore starter to begin his Orioles career with five straight wins since Jimmy Key in 1997.

"This is baseball. Sometimes you have a good day, sometimes you have a bad day," Chen said through a translator. "Definitely, I had a terrible start today."

The loss ended Baltimore's five-game winning streak and nine-game road run. The Orioles scored the game's first three runs but got only two hits after the second inning ? both in the ninth.

"If you came in today thinking you'd get their starting pitcher out of the game after five innings, you'd like your chances," manager Buck Showalter said

Baltimore went up 1-0 in the first when Xavier Avery walked, advanced on a fly ball and scored on a single by Nick Markakis.

The Orioles added a pair of unearned runs in the second after Harper drifted from center to left field to chase down a wind-blown fly ball, then dropped it. Robert Andino drove in a run with a groundout and Avery added an RBI single before Strasburg struck out J.J. Hardy with two outs and runners on second and third.

Harper made amends in a three-run third. Strasburg singled, Espinosa doubled and Harper hit a liner to right that a diving Markakis gloved but lost when he hit the ground. The triple scored two runs, and Harper scored on a groundout by Ian Desmond.

Flores gave Washington a 4-3 lead with his first homer since Aug. 18, and that only served as a prelude to Strasburg's drive.

Desmond chased Chen with an RBI single in the fifth, and Espinosa homered with a runner on during a three-run eighth.

NOTES: Orioles C Matt Wieters, who had the day off after a night game, will have to wait until Monday to try to snap an 0-fror-18 slump. ... Tommy Hunter (2-2) takes the mound for Baltimore on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series against visiting Boston. ... Gio Gonzalez vies for his sixth win when the Nationals open a nine-game road trip Monday in Philadelphia. ... Avery got his first major league stolen base.
