Just about a decade ago, the mainstream introduction of the contradictory phrase "four-door coupe" angered me. I distinctly remember testing the Mercedes-Benz CLS at its press launch thinking, "This is a pretty car, but why not just call it a sedan?" I doubted the long-term viability of the genre, but the world's oldest automaker enjoyed the last laugh, as countless imitators have since carved a niche for themselves by building similarly-themed slope-tailed sedans.

Last week I tested the $76,000 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, an attractive (if pricey) alternative to run-of-the-mill Bimmers. But I didn't fully grasp the genre's potential until I borrowed an Audi A7 the following week back at home. The key differentiator? This time I was able to strap in a baby seat and shuttle my six month-old around town... and in doing so, I didn't feel old. The Audi seemed strangely sleek for its size, and the surprising steering feel and transient handling response actually made this 4,210 lb four-door fun to drive.

If that's not a great excuse to buy into the silliness of an oxmoronic marketing phrase, I don't know what is.

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? There is a correlation between high levels of the environmental toxin PCB and the distribution of body fat to the abdomen. This is shown in a new study published May 29 in the scientific journal Obesity. Abdominal fat is already known to increase the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, among other conditions.
Fat inside the abdomen (visceral fat) is considerably more dangerous that fat near the surface of the body (subcutaneous fat). For instance, fat in the abdomen has previously been linked to the development of diabetes. Monica Lind, associate professor in environmental medicine at the Section for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, together with Lars Lind, professor of medicine, has analysed data from the so-called PIVUS study, which comprises more than 1,000 70-year-olds in Uppsala.
From the same material they have previously shown that PCB can predict the development of diabetes. In the present study, these researchers measured levels in the blood of 23 persistent organic environmental toxins in the more than 1,000 70-year-old women and men. In nearly 300 of them, with the aid of magnetic imaging, they also investigated the amount of fat in various parts of the abdomen. Previous studies have used only BMI as a measure of fatness. They found that having high levels of the highly chlorinated and very persistent compound PCB189 was related to a high proportion of fat in the abdomen.
"These findings may indicate that PCB189, which was also related to developing diabetes, may be of significance in how fat is stored in the body," says Monica Lind.
To understand the underlying mechanism, more research is needed in the form of controlled laboratory studies. According to Monica Lind, there are several possible causes. For example, it would be interesting to study whether there is a hormonal impact on fat metabolism, an inhibition of the breakdown of cortisol, or an inhibition of the creation of oestrogen.

Independent Animal Rescue (IAR), an all-volunteer, nonprofit animal rescue and rehabilitation program based in Durham, is currently organizing its 10th Annual Painted Chair and More Auction Saturday, July 28 at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham.? This major fundraiser benefits IAR?s mission to rescue and provide care for homeless, abandoned, and abused dogs and cats throughout the Triangle and features a live auction of fine art and a silent auction of art, prints and other items, food, music and fun.
Accepted media are original oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, prints, mixed media and fine crafts. Also desirable is 3D art such as hand painted furniture (chair, dressers, chests, stools etc.) indoor and outdoor sculpture, fiber art and quilts and jewelry. Not accepted are copies or computer-generated prints. Art may reflect a theme of dogs or cats, but is not required. 2D entries must be framed and ready to hang or with hardware attached to a canvas frame to allow for suspension.
Submissions must include a completed application, digital photo of the entry and a short artist bio.? Artists will be contacted to confirm their entry; accepted work will be displayed prior to the event on IAR?s website.
All sales proceeds from the auction will be 100% directed to support the programs and mission of IAR. All art donations are tax-deductible and greatly appreciated.

What is one of the biggest threats to health today according to the mainstream media? It?s not the fact that?mercury is present in a wide majority of the processed food supply, or even the fact that excessive amounts of radioactive waste is?now admitted to have heavily contaminated the Pacific Ocean. No, the number one villain according to the mainstream media is natural sunlight ? the very same sunlight that generates vitamin D upon coming into contact with your skin.
Vitamin D has been found to slash your risk of cancer, aid in?fat loss, beat fluoride in?cavity prevention, and much more. Nonetheless, it appears that the substance is quite threatening as far as the media is concerned. The FDA continues to announce warnings over the effectiveness of sunscreen, urging consumers to get higher SPF level products ? many of which contain cancer-causing chemicals that are of much greater threat than natural sunlight. In addition, sunscreen completely blocks the production of vitamin D. Is it any wonder why there has been a resurgence of the rickets?
Sun exposure, it seems, is something that is quite deadly according to the press. According to many ?experts? like?Dr. Robin Ashinoff, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at?Hackensack?University Medical Center, it is important to ?shield yourself as much as possible? from the sun. In fact, the doctor states that going outside with sunscreen is ?almost as bad? as going out?with sunscreen. Surging up fear among concerned mothers worldwide (who will not allow their children out of the house without slathering them up with sunscreen and therefore causing serious childhood development problems), the?doctor states:
?Wearing sunscreen and then deliberately going out in the sun is almost as [bad] as going out with no sunscreen at all.????You don?t get burned, but the UV rays are still getting into your skin. Sunscreen is important, but you should also wear the right clothing and shield yourself as much as possible from direct sun exposure.?
Ashinoff goes on to say that when it comes to sunscreen, you should get the ?highest number? you can ? particularly anything above 50 SPF. Essentially, the sun is being propagated as carcinogenic threat to the entire population. Meanwhile, the real threats lie in the sunscreen formula itself ? lending reason as to why?sunscreen causes cancer.?Oxybenzone and other vague mystery chemicals are commonly placed in many brand name sunscreens, with many such chemicals yet to be proven as safe to use at all. About 8 percent of all sunscreens have been quality tested by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to be both safe and effective for the intended use, whereas the other?92 percent contain at least one (if not many more) of the ingredients designated as detrimental for human use.
Meanwhile, vitamin D is being recognized as one of the most important substances for human health. Are people deficient in carcinogenic sunscreen chemicals, or could it possibly be vitamin D ? a natural biproduct of sunlight?

To close out the idea that Microsoft is doing the piracy, the stunning Google data report reveals over 2.5 million requests to remove URLs and targeted sites that are believed to be violating Microsoft's copyrights. One of the most frequent complaints from Microsoft involve illegal downloads of Microsoft's operating system and other?proprietary?software. According to
Business Week, Microsoft submitted over 536,716 requests to Google in the past month alone. Google will investigate and remove URLs and targeted websites from search results when the content is plagiarized or steals copyrighted intellectual property.
It is a bit of a surprise that a software maker, Microsoft, filed more complaints than the entertainment industry giants who are trying to fight extensive online piracy. Microsoft did not have a comment to make about Google's report, and the report does not give detailed information about the requests, beyond the illegal operating system and other software downloads.
Google set up and conducted a review of complaints to get a better understanding of copyright and other intellectual property abuses. The review covered requests to remove sites or pages with copyright infringing content from its search results, and the requests dated back to July 2011.
Now Google's Transparency Report has a page that shows the the monthly URL removals that came from complaints about copyright infringement. The Transparency Report gives options of "all time" since July 11, 2011, "the past month" and other time periods. The report for the latest month, ending on May 25, showed the following:?
1,255,402 requests to remove URLs.?
24,374 Targeted Domains were identified in the Transparency Report. The list of top targeted domains includes Filestubes, Torrentz and Pirate Bay. The total number of targeted domains is 105,928.
1,314 Copyright owners and their complaints are listed in the Transparency Report. Joining Microsoft were NBC Universal, which took second place in the number of complaints against?3,728 targeted domains and 165,662 URLs in the latest month. BPI Ltd represents the British recording industry and complained about?551 targeted domains and 51,087 URLs in the latest month. Other major copyright owners included SONY Music, Paramount Pictures, EMI, and even Porn Pros.
1,099 Reporting Organizations contributed requests. Marketly Llc represented two copyright owners and led the pack with?2,197,293 URLs and?18,997 targeted domains. In second place was NBC Universal representing itself and submitting?1,005,765 urls and?15,619 targeted domains. Other reporting organizations included Takedown Piracy Llc, and Remove Your Content Llc.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is aggressively pushing the idea that, contrary to widespread belief, President Barack Obama is tightfisted with taxpayer dollars. To back it up, the administration cites a media report that claims federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since the Eisenhower years.
"Federal spending since I took office has risen at the slowest pace of any president in almost 60 years," Obama said at a campaign rally Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.
The problem with that rosy claim is that the Wall Street bailout is part of the calculation. The bailout ballooned the 2009 budget just before Obama took office, making Obama's 2010 results look smaller in comparison. And as almost $150 billion of the bailout was paid back during Obama's watch, the analysis counted them as government spending cuts.
It also assumes Obama had less of a role setting the budget for 2009 than he really did.
Obama rests his claim on an analysis by MarketWatch, a financial information and news service owned by Dow Jones & Co. The analysis simply looks at the year-to-year topline spending number for the government but doesn't account for distortions baked into the figures by the Wall Street bailout and government takeover of the mortgage lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The MarketWatch study finds spending growth of only 1.4 percent over 2010-2013, or annual increases averaging 0.4 percent over that period. Those are stunningly low figures considering that Obama rammed through Congress an $831 billion stimulus measure in early 2009 and presided over significant increases in annual spending by domestic agencies at the same time the cost of benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare and the Medicaid were ticking steadily higher.
A fairer calculation would give Obama much of the responsibility for an almost 10 percent budget boost in 2009, then a 13 percent increase over 2010-2013, or average annual growth of spending of just more than 3 percent over that period.
So, how does the administration arrive at its claim?
First, there's the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the official name for the Wall Street bailout. First, companies got a net $151 billion from TARP in 2009, making 2010 spending look smaller. Then, because banks and Wall Street firms repaid a net $110 billion in TARP funds in 2010, Obama is claiming credit for cutting spending by that much.
The combination of TARP lending in one year and much of that money being paid back in the next makes Obama's spending record for 2010 look $261 billion thriftier than it really was. Only by that measure does Obama "cut" spending by 1.8 percent in 2010 as the analysis claims.
The federal takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac also makes Obama's record on spending look better than it was. The government spent $96 billion on the Fannie-Freddie takeovers in 2009 but only $40 billion on them in 2010. By the administration's reckoning, the $56 billion difference was a spending cut by Obama.
Taken together, TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie combine to give Obama an undeserved $317 billion swing in the 2010 figures and the resulting 1.8 percent cut from 2009. A fairer reading is an almost 8 percent increase.
Those two bailouts account for $72 billion more in cuts in 2011. Obama supported the bailouts.
There's also the question of how to treat the 2009 fiscal year, which actually began Oct. 1, 2008, almost four months before Obama took office. Typically, the remaining eight months get counted as part of the prior president's spending since the incoming president usually doesn't change it much until the following October. The MarketWatch analysis assigned 2009 to former President George W. Bush, though it gave Obama responsibility that year for a $140 million chunk of the 2009 stimulus bill.
But Obama's role in 2009 spending was much bigger than that. For starters, he signed nine spending bills funding every Cabinet agency except Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security. While the numbers don't jibe exactly, Obama bears the chief responsibility for an 11 percent, $59 billion increase in non-defense spending in 2009. Then there's a 9 percent, $109 billion increase in combined defense and non-defense appropriated outlays in 2010, a year for which Obama is wholly responsible.
As other critics have noted, including former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, the MarketWatch analysis also incorporates CBO's annual baseline as its estimate for fiscal years 2012 and 2013. That gives Obama credit for three events unlikely to occur:
?$65 billion in 2013 from automatic, across-the-board spending cuts slated to take effect next January.
?Cuts in Medicare payments to physicians.
?The expiration of refundable tax cuts that are "scored" as spending in federal ledgers.
Lawmakers are unlikely to allow the automatic cuts to take full effect, but it's at best a guessing game as to what will really happen in 2013. A better measure is Obama's request for 2013.
"You can only make him look good by ignoring the early years and adopting the hope and not the reality of the years in his budget," said Holtz-Eakin, a GOP economist and president of the American Action Forum, a free market think tank.
So how does Obama measure up?
If one assumes that TARP and the takeover of Fannie and Freddie by the government as one-time budgetary anomalies and remove them from calculations ? an approach taken by Holtz-Eakin ? you get the following picture:
?A 9.7 percent increase in 2009, much of which is attributable to Obama.
?A 7.8 percent increase in 2010, followed by slower spending growth over 2011-13. Much of the slower growth reflects the influence of Republicans retaking control of the House and their budget and debt deal last summer with Obama. All told, government spending now appears to be growing at an annual rate of roughly 3 percent over the 2010-2013 period, rather than the 0.4 percent claimed by Obama and the MarketWatch analysis.

LONDON (Reuters) - The shadows being cast over the global economy darkened this month as the euro zone's private sector declined further and China's once-booming factories faltered, business surveys showed on Thursday.
Worryingly for European policymakers, a downturn that started in smaller euro zone periphery members is now taking root in the core countries of Germany and France, whose tepid combined growth had been keeping the troubled bloc afloat.
"We are very much in a period of weakening global growth. It doesn't quite feel like 2008 yet but the danger is we could get there quicker than we think," said Peter Dixon at Commerzbank
The data sent German Bund futures to a record high as investors sought relative safety, and the euro fell to a near two-year low against the dollar.
The moves were also exacerbated by Wednesday's news that European Union leaders have been advised by senior officials to prepare contingency plans in case Greece quits the single currency - a once seen unthinkable event.
The euro zone composite PMI, a combination of the services and manufacturing sectors and seen as a guide to growth, fell to 45.9 this month from April's 46.7, its lowest reading since June 2009 and its ninth month below the 50-mark that divides growth from contraction.
"It clearly indicates that the evaporating sentiment that we have seen in recent weeks as the Greece crisis has intensified is having a big impact on the economy," Dixon said.
"The concern has to be if this is happening ahead of the event what is going to happen if, or when, the shoe finally drops and we have something like a Greek exit from the euro zone - it doesn't bode well for the economy and does sound as though it is standing on the brink of something nasty."
Markit, which complies the PMIs, or purchasing managers indexes, said the reading was consistent with gross domestic product, which stagnated in the first quarter, falling by at least 0.5 percent across the region in the current quarter.
"The flash PMI figures for May look horrible and provide a clear warning that euro zone GDP will almost certainly show a contraction in Q2 after stagnating in Q1," said Martin van Vliet at ING.
Across the channel, official data showed Britain's economy shrank more than first thought between January and March, after the deepest fall in construction output in three years, while government spending made the biggest contribution to growth.
Markit will release its first flash PMI for the United States later on Thursday, giving an early indication of the manufacturing sector in the world's biggest economy.
The U.S. spring home-selling season got off to a strong start in April, with rising sales and prices providing evidence that a housing market recovery was gaining some traction, but a rise in inflation over the past year suggests the Federal Reserve has little firepower left to boost employment.
CORE CRUMBLES
PMI data from Germany, Europe's largest economy, showed its manufacturing sector contracted at a far greater pace than was expected, and its service sector saw minimal growth. In neighboring France, both sectors contracted faster than predicted by most economists.
German business sentiment also dropped for the first time in seven months in May, the Ifo think tank said, missing even the most conservative forecasts, in a sign that Europe's largest economy is vulnerable to euro zone turmoil despite holding up well until now.
Germany's economy has powered ahead of its peers after recovering swiftly from the 2008/09 financial crisis and has consistently brushed off debt worries plaguing peripheral euro zone countries and spreading through the bloc.
It grew 0.5 percent in the first quarter, data confirmed on Thursday, but a drop in inventories gave a warning signal for growth in the coming quarters, reflecting weakening new orders.
"There is a clear risk for a perceptible economic slowdown in Germany. The strong growth seen at the start of the year could not be maintained. There will be an awful lot of uncertainty out there about what's going to happen next in the run-up to the Greek election," said Andreas Scheuerle at DekaBank.
The prospect of a Greek exit from the euro zone is now being openly discussed as the country battles political and economic upheaval and faces an election on June 17.
Two separate recent Reuters polls of money market traders and economists both saw a slim majority saying Greece would still be a member of the 17-nation bloc at the end of the end of 2013.
A summit of the G8 leading industrialized nations at the weekend backed keeping Greece in the euro zone and the EU leaders have urged Athens to stay the course on austerity and complete reforms demanded under its bailout program.
CHINA BRAKES
HSBC's Flash China PMI, the earliest indicator of China's industrial sector, retreated to 48.7 in May from a final reading of 49.3 in April. It marked the seventh straight month that the index has been below 50.
The figures signal that the sluggish economic conditions of the first quarter are set to continue throughout the first half of the year in China's longest slowdown since the global financial crisis.
"The series of highly disappointing April activity data - exports, imports, industrial production and retail sales indicators all fell short of even the most pessimistic forecasts - the first gauge for economic activity in the current month is a further signal that internal and external headwinds are still biting into economic momentum," said Nikolaus Keis at UniCredit.
The HSBC PMI has provided a contrast to the Chinese government's official PMI. The government PMI hit a 13-month high of 53.3 in April as exports ticked higher although domestic orders showed signs of weakness.
That survey includes more state-owned firms in its results, while the HSBC PMI captures more private firms, which have a more restricted access to credit. The two surveys also have differing methodologies for seasonal adjustment.

At the U.S. Small Business Administration, we have the great privilege to work with many amazing small business owners.?Every day I see how small businesses are creating an economy built to last and living the American Dream.?I wanted to share these great stories with everyone ? so we asked small business owners to share their stories in a short video that demonstrates how their business benefited from the SBA and makes a difference in their local community.?
The response to SBA's?first video contest?was incredible ? we received over 100 submissions! It was a difficult process, but SBA selected four winners to participate in the Google + Hangout with me.?Thanks to all contest participants for taking the time from your busy schedules to submit these outstanding videos.?We look forward to highlighting all the videos on our website?in the coming weeks.

Dallas Robinson and Mike Buonomo started KISSTIXX Lip Balm as a project in college. ?They created a high quality SPF lip balm that was packaged in two compatible flavors, one for you and one for your special someone. ?The two flavors would combine on contact creating a new flavor or experience when you kiss. ?They have flavors like Fire & Ice that heat and cool the lips, Raspberry & Lemonade and Strawberry Daiquiri & Pina Colada. ?As students they needed the help of the SBA to create product to meet the demand. ?The SBA stepped up and now KISSTIXX gets inquiries all over the world. ?They are currently negotiating deals with major retailers stateside and expanding the kissing experience into over 30 countries. ?They were even able to convince celebrity billionaire Mark Cuban to financially back their company. ?

Reggie Rodgers is the Managing Director of R.R. Enterprise - better known as Rodgers? Banana Pudding Sauce, located in Chesapeake, VA.? Reggie is a service-disabled veteran, serving 26 years with the Navy.? In his first year of business, Reggie and his family worked with their local Small Business Development Center in Chesapeake to learn the nuts and bolts of operating a business.? They are now in the process of applying for a Patriot Express Loan, after attending a military community workshop at an SBDC in Hampton, VA.
