Apple iCloud

When I heard that iCloud?(free to $100 per year; $24.99 for iTunes Match), Apple's free data-syncing service, supported Windows machines, I was at first slack-jawed--and in a good way. Was it true? Could Mac users now access their Calendar, Contacts, iTunes music, photos, and other files from a PC? My open mouth tightened to a mere smile when I realized the answer was, "Well, sort of."

Apple's iCloud is a great service that does a number of things very well?namely, automatic back-ups of iOS devices?but shouldn't be confused with other file-syncing services along the lines of SugarSync (4.5 stars) and Dropbox (4 stars). Those two services, both PCMag Editors' Choice products, give you access to any files you mark to be synchronized from virtually any machine. For example, you can create and save a presentation on your office computer, sync it, and then access it from your home computer or mobile device by simply logging into the service. But what they don't do that iCloud does is synchronize your Apple apps, like Calendar, Contacts, and iTunes.

Apple's iCloud does synchronize some document files, but not any old thing you want. iCloud doesn't think about syncing documents per se. It thinks about syncing the data you have associated with an app. For example, iCloud can synchronize office files made with Apple productivity software iWork and let you access them anywhere an iWork app is installed. It also syncs images across your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even a Windows PC. iCloud makes music you buy through iTunes accessible to you from any iTunes player, and with the optional add-on service iTunes Match ($24.99 per year), it will sync and store up to 25,000 music files (no matter how you got them) that you have in your iTunes library. But iCloud doesn't synchronize many other files that you create or edit in other apps.

Once you understand what iCloud can and can't do, you'll likely find that it's a valuable and worthwhile service nevertheless, but that doesn't mean you don't also need another file-syncing service. All Apple device owners should sign up for iCloud as soon as humanly possible, but know that it won't meet all your file-syncing needs.

iCloud Sign Up and Requirements
To get iCloud, you need an Apple ID plus at least one of the following devices:

  • Mobile device running iOS5 (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, iPod touch 3rd or 4th generation; see How to Get Apple's iOS 5 for help)
  • Mac computer running OS X Lion 10.7.2
  • A Windows PC running Windows 7 or Vista SP2.

From a Mac running Lion, look under Preferences for the iCloud logo. Select it to dig into the options. On a Windows desktop or laptop, you'll want to surf over to apple.com/icloud/setup to download and install the local software. Additionally, there is a Web interface at iCloud.com where you can access some of your backed up information online, but it's not a very comprehensive system (more on that later).

For iPhones and iPads, look in Settings for the new iCloud icon that will appear after you update to iOS 5.

Tips for Backing Up Your iPhone and iPad
One part of iCloud that you should definitely take advantage of is automatic backup. From the iCloud page of the Settings panel, look toward the very bottom of the screen for the option Storage and Backup. Make sure "iCloud Backup" is switched on. Then, you'll want to poke around in the Manage Storage section, especially if you have a lot of apps, to further determine what should get backed up and what doesn't need to be. By turning off apps that are not important, you can save a lot of space. If saving space isn't your thing, you could just buy more space. Apple gives iCloud users 5GB to start, but you can buy up to 50GB more (making 55GB total) for $100 per year. iOS devices only back up over Wi-Fi so there's no worry about the service hogging data from your data plan.

A second feature to jump on upon installing iCloud is Find My iPhone or Find My iPad. Turn it on, and it can help you locate or remotely wipe a lost or stolen phone or tablet. There's also a Find My iPhone/iPad app, which you can use to locate lost devices, including Macs, provided you set up Find My Mac on your laptop or desktop.

MF Global's aborted fruit salad solution to capital woes (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A few months before MF Global collapsed in bankruptcy, some top executives at the futures firm were talking about a plan code-named "Project Honeydew" as a way of freeing-up badly needed capital and cash.

Reuters has learned that in early September, MF Global reached out to Bank of New York Mellon Corp to inquire whether the big custodial bank would be interested in entering into a joint venture for processing and clearing certain customer transactions, according to four people familiar with the situation.

The idea was to effectively merge MF Global's clearing operation with Bank of New York's and to enable the futures firm to maintain less regulatory capital on its balance sheet, these people say.

The negotiations were preliminary and did not advance far largely because Bank of New York did not seem particularly interested in the idea advanced by MF Global, sources say. By the time MF Global filed for bankruptcy on October 31, any talks with Bank of New York had long ended.

Kevin Heine, a Bank of New York spokesman, said, "We don't comment on market rumor or speculation."

A person close the company says the potential joint venture with Bank of New York was just one of several arrangements that companies were considering, and discussions about broadening their business relationship had been going on for many months.

The fact MF Global officials were looking for a way to reduce its regulatory capital in early fall could indicate that some at the firm were aware it needed to take longer-term measures to bolster its balance sheet.

"It was a great deal for MF Global, but not sure for Bank of New York," said a former MF Global employee familiar with the idea. "I'm not sure what they would get out of it."

Indeed, the idea of establishing clearing joint venture with Bank of New York coincided with a demand from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority that MF Global boost its capital holdings to offset some of the risk associated with the firm's big bet on European sovereign debt.

Ultimately, it was margin calls from lenders that provided financing for MF Global's gamble on sovereign debt of countries like Italy, Spain and Ireland that led to the firm's collapse. MF Global's bankers and trading partners required the firm to post more collateral on those transactions after Moody's Investor Service downgraded its debt on October 24.

A week later, MF Global filed for bankruptcy despite a last-ditch attempt to raise cash by selling off billions in securities to Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs Group and its futures brokerage arm to Interactive Brokers.

A potential last-minute deal with Interactive Brokers fell apart when it was discovered that at least $600 million in customer money was missing at MF Global. More than two months later, federal authorities are still trying to figure out where that customer money, which was supposed to have been kept separate from the firm's own money, may have gone.

The potential joint venture with Bank of New York, according to people familiar with the situation, was consistent with former MF Global CEO Jon Corzine's desire to transform the firm more into a trading firm than a brokerage.

The name "Project Honeydew" is believed to be a play on the "Mellon" part of Bank of New York's name. The code name was hatched by officials with MF Global and was just one of several potential strategic deals that investment bankers hired by the firm were brought in to consider.

It's not clear how active Corzine, the former New Jersey Governor and U.S. Senator, was in the Project Honeydew talks. The potential deal did not come up during his three days of testimony about the collapse of MF Global on Capitol Hill.

A Corzine spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Bradley Abelow, MF Global's former president and chief operating officer, in a filing in the firm's bankruptcy proceeding, said the firm cleared and processed trades for its own customers and other small brokerage firms in the futures firm.

Clearing is a backoffice operation in which a firm executes and settles trades and requires a firm to set aside capital in the event a trade goes array and one party needs to be made whole.

MF Global reached out Bank of New York because the nation's oldest bank cleared and processed some of the firm's own trading in U.S. Treasuries.

The majority of clearing and trade execution for MF Global's proprietary trades were handled by JPMorgan Chase & Co, which also arranged a $1.2 billion line of credit for the futures firm.

Reuters previously reported that JPMorgan agreed to process a last-ditch sale of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of securities to Goldman Sachs on October 27.

But JPMorgan did not immediately forward the proceeds from that sale as it was expected to do, say sources.

Man City beats Liverpool 3-0 to open 3-point lead

By ROB HARRIS

updated 6:51 p.m. ET Jan. 3, 2012

Manchester City rediscovered its attacking flair to sweep aside Liverpool with a 3-0 victory Tuesday night that opened a three-point lead over Manchester United in the English Premier League.

Sergio Aguero scored on an early blunder by goalkeeper Pepe Reina, and Yaya Toure and James Milner added goals for Manchester City, which lost at Sunderland and tied at West Bromwich Albion durign the busy holiday period.

"We were incredibly efficient, and it's a great win," City captain Vincent Kompany said. "It is one of the top six teams out of the way, and now we know United and the other teams have to play each other."

On a night of heavy rain, Aguero put City ahead in the 10th minute with a shot that took a slight deflection and bounced past Reina, who dived but missed the ball entirely. Toure doubled the lead in the 33rd with a header and Milner converted a penalty kick in the 75th after Martin Skrtel fouled Toure.

City manager Roberto Mancini apologized later for brandishing an imaginary yellow card at Skrtel.

"In the moment maybe I did that because I was not happy with the referee, but I made a mistake," Mancini said.

City's Gareth Barry was ejected in the 73rd minute for his second yellow card, given for bumping Daniel Agger.

"If you want to be a successful team, and they are one, you have got to be clinical," Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said. "We've got to get that into our makeup. Tonight we never had that. It's a lesson learned for us."

Liverpool was without Luis Suarez, who started an eight-game suspension for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

City (15-2-3) has 48 points, three more than United (14-2-3), which is at Newcastle on Wednesday.

Tottenham (13-3-3) is next with 42 points after winning 1-0 over visiting West Bromwich Albion (6-11-4) on Jermain Defoe's 63rd-minute goal.

In the night's other game, Sunderland (6-8-6) won 4-1 at Wigan, its fourth victory since Martin O'Neill replaced Steve Bruce as manager. Craig Gardner, James McClean, Stephane Sessegnon and David Vaughan scored for the visitors, who moved into 10th place. Hugo Rodallega scored for 18th-place Wigan (3-11-6).

MADRID (AP) ? Defending champion Real Madrid overcame a two-goal halftime deficit, beating Magala 3-2 in the first leg of the fifth round of the Copa del Rey.

Sergio Sanchez and Martin Demichelis gave Malaga the lead with almost identical headers in the 10th and 29th minutes, but Sami Khedira scored in the 68th, Gonzalo Higuain tied it two minutes later and Karim Benzema got the go-ahead goal in the 78th.

Madrid could advance to a quarterfinal against Barcelona, which hosts Osasuna on Wednesday night.

In other games, third-tier Mirandes won 2-0 at home against Racing Santander, second-tier Alcorcon had a 2-1 home victory against Levante and third-tier Albacete tied 0-0 with Athletic Bilbao.

The second legs of the total-goals matchups are next week.

___

LIBSON, Portugal (AP) ? American defender Oguchi Onyewu tapped in a cross from 5 yards in the 88th minute, giving Sporting Lisbon a 1-1 tie against Rio Ave in the Portuguese League Cup.

Monday's goal was the third of the season for Onyewu, who scored in the league against Rio Ave in a 3-2 win on Sept. 19 and against Nacional in a 1-0 victory on Dec. 10.

NYT: In new strategy, Panetta plans even smaller army

Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta has concluded that the Army has to shrink even below current targets, dropping to 490,000 soldiers over the next decade, but that the United States should not cut any of its 11 aircraft carriers, according to Pentagon officials and military analysts briefed on the secretary?s budget proposals.

Mr. Panetta is to disclose the strategy guiding hundreds of billions of dollars in Pentagon budget cuts during an unusual Defense Department news conference on Thursday, when President Obama is to appear in the Pentagon briefing room and make remarks ahead of those by Mr. Panetta and Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Obama has never before briefed reporters at the Pentagon, and administration officials said they did not know of any president who had.

Mr. Obama?s presence is an election-year effort to place the president squarely behind a new military strategy that will downsize the Pentagon, pivot from expensive ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and refocus on threats from China while not ignoring the threat of Iran.

Military experts familiar with Mr. Panetta?s thinking said that Mr. Obama had opposed reducing the American carrier fleet to 10 from 11 because of what he sees as the need to have enough force in the Pacific Ocean to act as a counterweight to China.

New fiscal reality
White House and Pentagon officials sought to portray Mr. Obama, who has been criticized by the Republican presidential candidates as weak on national security, as deeply involved in planning for the new strategy. ?He has led this review process personally,? said the National Security Council spokesman, Tommy Vietor. The White House followed up Mr. Vietor?s remarks with a list of a half-dozen strategy meetings that Mr. Obama had led with top Pentagon and military officials since September.

The new military strategy is driven by at least $450 billion in Pentagon budget cuts over the next decade. Another $500 billion in cuts could be ordered if Congress follows through on plans for deeper reductions.

As part of the new reality, Mr. Panetta is expected to propose cuts in coming weeks to next-generation weapons, including delays in purchases of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet, one of the most expensive weapons programs in history. Delaying the F-35 would leave its factories open, giving the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, a chance to work out continuing problems in developing the plane while freeing up money that otherwise would be devoted to buying the warplane in the next year or two.

Senior aides to both Mr. Panetta and General Dempsey said few specific details on Pentagon budget cuts would be released at the Pentagon on Thursday. But a number of Pentagon officials, military officers and defense-budget specialists briefed on Mr. Panetta?s plans discussed specific programs on the chopping block on the condition of anonymity ahead of announcements expected this month.

The Army is already is slated to drop to a force of 520,000 from 570,000, but Mr. Panetta views even that reduction as too expensive and unnecessary and has endorsed an Army of 490,000 troops as sufficient, officials said.

The defense secretary has made clear that the reduction should be carried out carefully, and over several years, so that combat veterans are not flooding into a tough employment market and military families do not feel that the government is breaking trust after a decade of sacrifice, officials said.

No plans for new ground wars?
A smaller Army would be a clear sign that the Pentagon does not anticipate conducting another expensive, troop-intensive counterinsurgency campaign, like those waged in Afghanistan and Iraq. Nor would the military be able to carry out two sustained ground wars at one time, as was required under past national military strategies.

Instead, the military would be required to fight and win one war, spoil the military aspirations of another adversary in a different region of the world, and all the while be able to conduct humanitarian relief operations and other contingencies, like continuing counterterrorism missions and enforcing a no-fly zone.

The size of the Marine Corps is also expected to be reduced, although it would be expected to benefit from a renewed focus on the Asia-Pacific region, with Marines deployed aboard ships as well as at bases west of Hawaii.

Mr. Panetta is also examining personnel costs, with cuts to future retirement benefits and fees for health care offered to Defense Department retirees on the table.

Some areas of Pentagon spending will be protected. The defense secretary will not advocate cuts in financing for defense and offense in cyberspace, for Special Operations forces or for the broad area of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

In general, the new ?Defense Strategic Review? to be outlined Thursday will try to define American national security interests in what officials said would be more realistic, narrow terms ? to allow the acquisition of required military capabilities with a reduced budget.
